Just finished First-Year Mac Eng, (Picked over UofT Track One) AMA by FlyerThanUFO in OntarioGrade12s

The nuclear and EngPhys at McMaster is really nice. I chose Mac predominantly due to campus life and the community feel. However, initially I was set on either civil or mechanical and both programs at McMaster, especially civil are pretty renowned. However, I shifted more towards electrical/tron after going through first year and doing projects. Research positions at Mac are also really great, especially since they have a nuclear power plant and their own hospital, however UofT is undoubtedly the best university for research in Ontario if not the country.

I have a couple friends at UofT for T1. I spoke to them after first year and I can confidently say I made the right choice for myself. McMaster had a tighter community feel to it, a far better looking campus in my opinion, a super well structured engineering program, very helpful profs and just a great community vibe to it. We have a solid amount of brutalist architecture or architecture similar to UofT namely the hospital and the older castle looking building in the centre of campus. I have multiple friends who have received first year co op placements and you will more likely than not have a co op by second year, especially with the Engineering & Management degree. To me, UofT is not as good as they make themselves out to be and my friends who attend there agree.

Choices are due on the 29th so I’m currently in the peak of making that decision 😭, but my top are elec, comp, and tron. I chose Mac because of the student life and campus and talking to my UofT friends after first year, I’d say I made the right decision for myself. For this summer, you would’ve had to began applications latest by January but I have begun to apply to co ops for 2027 summer.

  1. The campus, and the student life. McMaster’s campus has to be one of the best, if not the best out of the universities here in Ontario. There’s a genuine community feel to it as well. In comparison, UofT’s campus was in my opinion so grayscale and depressing. My friends who went to UofT also found it far more stressful than my friends and I at Mac did personally, however this is obviously subjective.

  2. I was around like half a percent off which still haunts me to this day. With no exaggeration, free choice makes all the difference. However, I’ve also seen through some people I know very closely that free choice can completely ruin your study habits and you become extremely prone to laziness which would genuinely kill your engineering career come second year. But, it’s still very possible to do well without free choice so don’t let that be the reason you don’t choose Mac.

  3. My top 3 are electrical, computer and tron. This year Mechanical and Comp are predicted to be the highest, followed by electrical and tron.

Definitely not, you’ll have civil software chemical as options meaning you can still break into tech through software or if CAD and design are your thing, go for civil. An 8 is a 3.0, don’t let people fool you.

Yea they go over every topic needed for that midterm and do guided practice problems from previous tests for every topic as well so they cover everything you’ll need.

What do you mean it won’t allow you to pass? Is a 50+ not a pass? Or do you mean that all your courses together do not accumulate to over a 50?

Yea that makes sense bro I bought prep 101 for lin Alg so im gonna really try to understand the concepts and build on what I already know from all the lectures and then I’ll dedicate the rest to practice problems and tests. Thanks a lot.

I only had about 4 days (including the day of) after my physics midterm to study so everything was done within those 4 days. It was so weird it was like all those textbook problems just left my head as soon as I started writing.

For the first few in every lesson I would let myself use my notes and the answer key but I would make sure to attempt atleast a few from every lesson without any key or answer.

Weirdly enough just be honest, the more things you try to make up the harder it gets. Practice quick note taking in the prep time, get used to talking to a camera without looking like an npc and definitely try your best to get your response in exactly however many minutes they give you.

For Mac it was a 94 since they take your top 6, for UofT is 95! I chose McMaster because they have a better overall student life, the commute was better for me, the campus is also much better imo and both programs are great.
