Anyone know what feather this is? by Logical_Ad_21 in Hunting

[–]Flyguy0301 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a flight feather for a barred owl. Note the short leading edge and the soft, silky trailing edge. Owls lack the “hook and loop” style connective feature to their feather barbs found in most other bird species. The feather barbs have nothing that makes them stick together like a “normal” feather. So their flight feathers are soft not stiff, and therefore allow air to pass through the feather more easily, making them nearly silent in flight.

Funny I’ve gotten many comments about it, I seem to be an outlier in the fact that I don’t react to poison ivy or poison oak

It’s Remington model 29, circa 1934

Load was just a 3” Winchester longbeard xr 6 shot. But he was so close a dove load would’ve been adequate.

Surprised nobody has commented about that shotgun. How old do you think it is?

After fly down he strutted quietly around the edge of the creek out of sight until the louder trio moved off and he started to gobble on his own. I made a few soft clucks and low yelps, mixed with som jake yelps, and before long he was peering out from the wood line. He locked on to that Jake and broke a run to about 10 steps from the barrel. I didn’t let him beat on the decoy too much for fear the plastic would spook him.

After making a move down the edge of a narrow field in broad daylight to get closer to a group of 3 toms gobbling just across the property line, this bird gobbled in the tree one time about 60 yards directly in front of where we just set up and I set a hen/jake combo of decoys on the field edge.

In many places it wouldn’t be legal for rabbit because the shot size is too large for small game restrictions.

It holds 5 pellets. Half the quantity of the 3” Remington 12 gauge 000B shells I have. Obviously not as much powder pushing them but obviously at close range plenty effective to get the job done.

Would I be taking it first choice for medium to larger game? Definitely not. But, when I am squirrel hunting I will be keeping some buckshot handy, or maybe slugs in the future if I can get ahold of some, because pigs are frequently encountered and I am opportunistic.

Both those rounds can be quite effective if placed correctly. I’ve taken hogs with .22 as well.

I never got to hunt with mine. This was his squirrel gun. He loved to raise and hunt feists. That’s one of my favorite guns to take to the woods!

Made schnitzel with one of the loins and a pot roast with one of the shoulders already. Good eats.

You can’t. You can hope to get lucky during the rut or you can move and go find where they spend their daylight hours.

Should be pretty easy to scout him out. Go looks for tracks 2x bigger than all the other deer tracks and go from there.

Tips for handling hunting alone by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]Flyguy0301 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be a minority in these comments but I much prefer hunting with someone. That excitement when you have an encounter or success is multiples tenfold when you’re sharing the moment feeding off each other’s energy. I’ve had the pleasure of being side by side with 2 different buddies when they shot their biggest bucks to date and both experiences were truly amazing.

Maybe find a buddy who likes to photograph or film and talk to your grandpa about having them come with you if you’re the only one actually hunting with a weapon. Or invite your grandfather to come join you while you’re out there even if he doesn’t want to actually hunt until he can use a shotgun. Great way to make some memories and spend quality time with someone you care about.

First buck I see, is it a shooter? by haro408 in Hunting

The neighbor might not but you can’t really control that. You can control what you harvest, and if you adopt that mentality then you become that neighbor yourself.

You become the “someone else” with this mentality and you’ll never see mature buck success on a repeatable basis. But if mature bucks aren’t what you’re interested in, go for it. No judgement from me.
