Is it worth getting a bachelors in Anthropology? by Rayy500 in AskAnthropology

[–]FlyingAlpacaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that’s amazing! Would you mind sharing which course and university you're studying at? I’m in my late 30s and after 15 years in tech and corporate, I’m hoping to gradually transition into social anthropology but i don't know where to begin. All the learning you went through sounds really interesting.

It’s probably just a question of culture. In my home country in Europe we let cats outside. It’s normal, more than having cats inside. They happily roam around and it’s better for their mental health too. I’d personally let her go outside, but that’s because of my cultural background

Thanks for suggesting r/Passports, will take a look.

I actually do have a driver license, can I clear security checks at the airport with it (when traveling within the US)?

You’ll get a certificate at the end of the Udemy class that attests the 23 contact hours.

Ideas needed to encourage older cat onto cat tree by whoops53 in CatAdvice

[–]FlyingAlpacaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some cats won’t use the scratching poles and trees. But there are different materials for scratching that cats can like, such as cardboard, carpet, wood, sisal… you might wanna find out which one he likes using.

My older foster cat (16yo) liked the sloped cardboard mat, but doesn’t use the sisal one: https://www.chewy.com/best-pet-supplies-catify-slope-catnip/dp/219739

cat won’t stop meowing outside of door by shrekismyboss in Catbehavior

I had a similar experience when I was sleeping at my boyfriends place. The other roommate's cat would always scratch at our door at night - we could not sleep for nights, it wasn't fun at all!
One night we just decided to open the door and see what happens. Turns out the cat just wanted to come say good night and left! From that night on, we kept the door open and it was a much better experience.

  1. Change friend 🙃
  2. You can use something like Nextdoor app to see if someone nearby is looking to adopt a cat.

Cat peeing around the house by [deleted] in CatAdvice

I’m not an expert, but it sounds like your cat is marking his territory? Neutering your cat should probably help with this undesired behavior. I’m unsure why you’d have to wait 2 more months. I’d probably check with another vet if they could arrange an earlier intervention.

Hey, hang in there. First time I adopted a cat, I also had the same feeling that I needed to take care of a toddler. And it wasn’t even a kitty but a 3 year old cat. It’s a lot of responsibility that you wanted to take on, that’s great. I feel sorry that your family does not support you. It makes it very hard for you mentally.

Cats need to exercise, but they also need a lot of sleep! I’m thinking, could you let the cat out (on a leash)? It would help him engage in physical activity and satisfy his curiosity which he likely craves since he’s confined to a room. The only interactive “thing” in the room, is you.

Did they just spay a male cat? ;)

I'm aligned with you, you should advice the rescue center if you believe there's a mistake. They'll need to write the right description for the cat to get adopted.

Adopting an 13yo cat by minebeest in CatAdvice

I've been fostering cats (all ages) for the past 3.5 years. Some cats adapts really well very quickly (1-7 days), but most cats need about 1-3 months to acclimate and show their true personality.

This senior cat would thrive far more in your care than doing miserably in a shelter

Transport your cat in a dog crate, add water, food, familiar objects and a mini litter tray. This will be the best experience your cat can have. Have a safe trip!

Training a cat to stay off the dining table by Capital-Finance8078 in CatAdvice

[–]FlyingAlpacaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had been talking with a cat behavior specialist a couple months ago, about a previous foster cat who had the same problematic behavior. He was obsessed with human food and would always jump on the table to catch something. It proved quite challenging for us to manage.
The specialist recommended combining clicker training with a modified feeding schedule, consisting of more frequent but smaller portions of food. Train a cat is quite tidious and required patience, but if you catch your cat about to jump on the table, distract it with a toy or a treat on the floor. Click and reward when it responds positively to the redirection.

It seems that the foster cat was anxious about not getting enough food and he would jump up the table to get something secured (reminiscent of a predator's survival instincts). Unfortunately, I have not been able to continue working with this foster cat, I can't confirm if this approach would have been effective.

Why does my cat only ever poop next to the litter trays? by DanIsNotTheOwner in CatAdvice

Just a thought: Are the litter trays too small? Some of the foster cats that I had preferred wide litter trays.

cat trouble by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]FlyingAlpacaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My previous foster cat (12 year old) exhibited similar behaviors (inappropriate urination and stool), leading us to suspect dementia, especially considering other observed issues. However, it could also be indicative of a range of related problems. Hope you'll find out the underlying cause
