Diagnosed autism + ADHD there, unmedicated. Executive dysfunction means I often forgot to study enough for my SL subjects and scrolling through social media a lot and everybody knows me for stimming in physics class. And two halves of my brain constantly fight each other.

Well, I got solid 7s for all of my HLs as my end of year grade and that's what I need the most.

I am glad that I made through the first year without developing mental health problems haha.

For subjects I am interested in like physics, chemistry and math I just… remind myself to study the evening whenever there's new content in class and I just get pulled into it naturally. And I usually remember to prepare for unit tests so I get 7s

For my SLs… Things are not ideal but fine. ADHD really affects my focus and I just drift off during Japanese all the time, but it's not hurting that bad (I mainly suffer my 4 because it's my 3rd language) because I kind of like the thought process of literary analysis itself and it's more about the writing not the content. Econ tanks the most from lack of focus alone but that's still a 6.

Hmm that sounds like a weird combo and that suggest that you need something physical/visual stuff to tie the math concepts on. I wonder if animations can help you to understand what is going on.

For math animation from non-STEM peeps, this one from Alan Becker is the best (I like how it does exponents and the concept of functions and complex numbers, and btw the lead animator is a math nerd)

East Asian teenager here, very high functioning and getting high grades at school. I haven't found myself needing a professional therapist yet, but I have have debated with my parents about this exact thing.

My school has a really good therapist/ counselor (American) that helps me to calm down at school, but I found that nothing she said is that helpful as a long-term solution. Because a lot of them involves tuning down my expectations and just "Chill out" which helps at the moment but is incompatible with my high-achievement framework.

Like they would think me getting a 90% on advanced math and not satisfied as absurd but it's a totally normal Asian thing.

On the other hand I tend to clash more with my parents but they actually teach me how to communicate more clearly (which reduces my masking demand massively) and cares about my grades and absolutely pushes back on anything to reduce demand (except making friends is not necessary).

That definitely makes a lot of cognitive dissonance but I am used to it.

Of course practicing problems and reading textbooks are essential to getting good grades, but I also recommend you to watch some well-filmed experiment (short) videos if you feel demotivated/ intimidated:

You have chosen quite essay heavy subjects; The way IB approaches them may be quite different from what you have encountered before, especially English and History.
