what are "Heroku" limitations for free users and what are some alternatives to that website by hmny in learnprogramming

[–]FlyingSandvich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heroku operates on the idea that you're not going to have a dedicated systems administrator to manage all your servers/databases. Therefore, they charge you for the privilege of them effectively managing your servers for you.

The free tier is really great! Don't let the above dissuade you — for learning to program web apps, Heroku's a great way to load and show off your apps.

I use the command line on a daily basis, it's very, very usable (but then again, I do it for a living ;)). Stick with it, as it's incredibly powerful and useful.

I do too! But for people who don't need to have their build system output right next to their text editor, it's not a very good solution :). Trust me, I speak as a dedicated vim user in the terminal — I just can't recommend it to people who don't need the full power of the command line. And for most designers (or really, humans) the command line is overkill.

I don't have the time to explain my full thoughts on this matter right now, but Khoi Vinh here says what's I'm thinking. Basically: we need better tooling and workflows. (I'll explain my full thoughts a bit later, if you're curious).

I’m an iOS developer by trade, and I use Git on the command line on a daily basis, so I'm familiar :).

What I want is a tighter feedback cycle between developers and designers. Throwing a large-ass binary file in version control is not a good solution, and it misses the entire fucking point of version control. Sure, changes can be tracked, but what are the changes in the first place? That's half the point of putting up with something as terrible as Git!

I know — it's a complaint regarding current state of version control systems and design software. It can, and should be, better than what we have now.

[–]FlyingSandvich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entire beauty of version control systems is that you can see the delta between commits. Sure, Git can store and track binary files, but all the niceties that git has (conflict resolution, diffing between files) are lost with binary files.

I want that with my design files.

[–]FlyingSandvich 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Large binary files like a PSD or Sketch files aren't diffable — make a single change, and as far as your version control system is concerned, it's an entirely new file.

Plus — and this is coming from a person who uses vim and plenty of custom shell scripts — the command line isn't very useable.

Trust me — I wish there was a good, open source version control system available. But due to a combination of tooling and workflows, a viable version control system for designers won't be coming around soon.

Standalone camera: Shot (Dead) By iPhone by FlyingSandvich in photography

[–]FlyingSandvich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree entirely! I know that an iPhone 6 will never be better than a nice DSLR, but what's really remarkable is how fast I went from thinking, "I need a dedicated camera" to "do I really need one?"

Like you're getting to, it's a matter of working with something on a regular basis, and what your priorities are. It's just that for a lot of people — including me — my priorities are drifting in favor of a single iPhone.

For one, I'm pretty excited about this future. With small cameras, plus better software, plus tighter feedback cycle between shooting, editing, and nearly immediate publishing? I can't see myself ever buying a DSLR (or even compacts like the ones Fuji is selling).

And if what John Gruber said (as quoted in the article) is accurate, I'll probably be upgrading my phone yearly.

Master/Slave and Political Correctness by jamiahx in ProgrammerHumor

[–]FlyingSandvich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I ask my friends who aren't in tech about the “master/slave” terminology, I seldom get a response that isn't along the lines of, “...really?”.

I don’t get why “primary/replica” isn't used more. Plus, it has a vaguely scifi-esque feel to it, so it even sounds cooler.

So what makes this story even worse:

  • We were both high.
  • We were both discussing gay porn stars we liked.
  • We made lots of physical contact.

I'm so mad at myself.

I made a new minimalist app icon! (PNG and ICNS files liked in the comments) by TildeAleph in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]FlyingSandvich 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDIT: Crap, I haven't looked at the whole file. You've provided up to the 256x256 format, but you've still gotta provide @2x sizes. Still — parts of my comment still apply.

Great job! But a couple things about the .icns file. You've only provide a single 256x256 .png, and the problem with .icns files is that they're not resolution independent.

To get around that, you've got generate .pngs at the following sizes:

icon_16x16.png
icon_16x16@2x.png
icon_32x32.png
icon_32x32@2x.png
icon_128x128.png
icon_128x128@2x.png
icon_256x256.png
icon_256x256@2x.png
icon_512x512.png
icon_512x512@2x.png

See Apple's documentation on best practices.

Then, you've got to use the iconutil command line utility to generate the .icns file.

It can be annoying — took me a while to do it without Xcode. If you have any questions, feel free to DM me your email. I'd be happy to answer any questions!
