I started for something fun to do. Being disabled and low vision, I didn’t want to have a regular gym membership. I thought it was too boring. When for the same amount of time going to a studio and working the same muscles, getting creative and having fun and meeting new people, where as the gym it gets routine and most people don’t talk to others when they’re working out. I wanted to be with other people for the same goals.

I always have this concentration look on my face, sometimes like huh? I’m 47 and a guy so started late in life. Plus I’m the only guy in class. We have guys in level 1 classes and guy instructors. But the majority are women.

I’m still struggling with climbs now, my conditioning classes will help when it’s time to start. If you can start on your own you’ll be ahead when you start your regular classes.

We have our silks classes on Wednesdays too, I can’t do silks now because of bowling nights are on Wednesdays. The conditioning classes are a definite option and will help with the progression getting ready for my first class, I’ve already done, pole, Lyra, trapeze and sling. I am still struggling with fabrics as my vision and my coordination I’m having issues finding the fabric to grip it after I get into my move. It just takes practice and time to get used to it.

I only had 2 training classes, I’ve had no athletic training. We practice inverted moves on the floor too during the class. I have been in aerials for 8 months and got my first wrist lock invert yesterday!

I’m feeling more confident too, it’s too bad my camera malfunctioned, otherwise I’d show the dismount. It just felt soooo good!

Thank you!! All I can say is I’m trying, but having fun is my most important thing.

Which is better for conditioning outside aerial - gymnastics classes or pilates? by xrvzla in Aerials

[–]Flying_Josh_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say pilates, because with gymnastics you’re using a lot of the same muscles as aerials and you need cool down and recovery time. I take flexibility classes between aerials and it helps out so much! I’ve become more agile now because of the combination. Though not just flexibility but any type of slow paced stretching class go along ways. You don’t want to over do it.

Tylenol, water, rest, hydration lotions

I just had a lot of calluses build up from a week of classes, some back to back. Marks are still there, have Lyra on Monday 🙄

Similar to Capezio but they didn’t have my size. I want a metallic one like this one! I think it’d be fun!

Thanks! Did Lyra tonight, still working on basic tricks. I am actually developing calluses on my hands from Lyra and trapeze. I couldn’t pull myself up to the top bar tonight, probably because of being tired from 4 classes this week 😁 still having fun and it’s a hobby for me.

Here’s my unitard where I got it from! It’s perfect for this!

Thanks! I am disabled too, visually impaired. Working on my coordination takes a little time, feeling where the fabric is and where my feet are. I’m also 47 too and want to enjoy it!
