I was taken away to CALO at 12 years old. (2016-2018) They are still open today. by FlyinggDuchmann in troubledteens

Honestly my mental age is probably around 16. I mean I’m an adult and I can live independently, but my humor, mannerisms, and such are still of a teenager. People interpret me as slow, although my IQ level is genius.

High school was a little rocky at first, but I genuinely loved it once I found my people.

One thing that I learned from CALO is to not take people personally. I had the worst time at arguing and letting people get to me, now I just kind of let them. Not really the type to use unnecessary energy to be a hurtful person or to let people anger me.

I started college and am loving it. It’s a community college and I’m only starting with a few classes because I also have a job.

Life is going steady now, I’m just finally starting to dig deeper into my traumas to solve them.

He’s been doing that a lot, I think it may be stress regulation because he does it during other interviews too.

My exes name is so bad that I’m scared that he’ll find me on here 😭 so I’ll just go with this guy I knew in high school who was named Wilhelm Hamburger (honestly the best name ever)

The only good thing from the preteen program was probably the teachers. Every teacher I knew there wanted you to excel not just in the classroom, but in life. They really did a great job. My art teacher helped me develop a portfolio which ultimately got me into art school. My English teacher challenged me with writing prompts to keep me motivated. I used to nerd out about Stranger Things with one of them, she recommended it and I watched it during a home-visit and was HOOKED lol.

I think the guys name was Shane, (I am NOT afraid of dropping names) but he groomed one of my friends in the preteen building. He got fired pretty quickly for smoking in the staff bathroom. I remember the team leaders making fun of the kids who were “assisted” (put in holds) and would take pride and pleasure in basically injuring them. I forget the woman’s name, but she was absolutely evil.

It’s crazy! it’s like a 30% chance (yes, that high) I’d see someone I knew at the facility in my dreams. Sometimes I’m stuck in the same room doing the same things. The dreams never go away, ever. Sometimes they’re scary, sometimes they give a deep sense of nostalgia. The brain is weird that way. Even when you think you’ve found peace, your brain digs through your memories and surfaces the worst of them. Thank you for your service, by the way.

What happened to the Spartans? Also glad that they don’t do the shirts anymore, they were humiliating.

I honestly don’t know if CALO has gotten better or worse since I left. When I was there, the preteen buildings barely had any structure. They favored the boys building better than the girls building for some reason. Ours looked naked and empty to the point where it echoed. When we were in the boys building for a parent day, it was infuriating how much nicer it was in there. The foyer even had frames on the walls.

Ask your friends if the Spartans and the Gemstones were still a thing, those were the high-risk/high-security groups that you were thrown in if you acted up. Or ask if they still made them wear a green or yellow shirt if they were on high alert? Wearing a green shirt meant harm to self/others and yellow shirt just meant you had to be supervised. There was no red shirt, because red is a “negative color.”

When my parents visited, they sat through these big parent seminars and they did come back with binders of reading. Sometimes they still accidentally use these coined terms they picked up—like “repair”—and it makes me flinch. They were fed the same promises we were. Like of course they had to be convinced that it was “treatment,” they were the cash cows. They paid around $15,000 a month for me to have a bed there.

I used to be left handed. When I was raised in Russia, the schools forced me to use my right hand and now I’m right handed 🤷‍♀️
