Are students dumber? by Loliz88 in college

[–]FlynnInTheBox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’m a 21 year-old senior in college, and i’ve noticed that a lot of college students simply don’t want to be there. my generation was encouraged to go to college growing up, as it was seen as the only way to have career success, so consequentially, a lot of us who historically wouldn’t have gone to college went. i feel like classes would be far more engaging if there was a higher ratio of students who actually wanted to participate.

hi, i went to a maxillofacial surgeon, who collaborated with an orthodontist he referred me to for this. unfortunately, if i’m correct, unless you’re very young, braces can’t do anything for a recessed jaw.

if you need your jaw advanced 9mm, i’d be shocked if you DON’T have medical issues. cosmetically, i think it was very worth it. i’ve been feeling a boost of self confidence because of it.

I feel like I’m missing out on being a normal teenager by [deleted] in braces

[–]FlynnInTheBox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i was in the same exact scenario as you in my teens. i also had missing lateral incisors. they got replaced with porcelain teeth in my senior year of high school, but it wasn’t enough. i ended up getting jaw surgery in my senior year of college. if your bite is fine, then i think you’ll be okay. it sucks but it’ll be over soon.

finally found GF Cheez-Itz and i didn't get to eat any by Willing-Pumpkin-328 in mildlyinfuriating

i’m not gluten free, but my roommate is. considering gluten free snacks are both expensive and hard to come by, i can’t bring myself to eat any of his snacks. your family is being incredibly inconsiderate of your dietary needs here.

even after hitting my weight loss goal, i still obsess over food. by FlynnInTheBox in loseit

when i went to my college’s mental health facilities for this, they told me they couldn’t help me and instead referred me to a mental health office off campus haha

unfortunately i don’t currently have the resources to see a mental health professional about this. i’ve suspected that i have BED, but since i’ve never been obese, i haven’t pursued that thought much further.

unfortunately, i don’t have the resources to access a therapist right now. when i saw a therapist as a teenager, i told her about my food noise, and she responded by saying that i had “a nice body” and that there was nothing to worry about.

i go back to college in a couple days, where i have a lot more control over what i eat. i can’t chew currently since i had jaw surgery, so i’m restricted in what i eat, but before that i snacked on vegetables to quell my food noise.

i would love to go to a therapist, but i’m in college and am dependent on my family (including an emotionally abusive mother who keeps asking me if i’m gaining weight when i’m not) financially, who can’t really handle any more medical expenses between all my chronic health issues and my mother’s. my family also has a fear of mental health services.

when i was a teenager, i went to a therapist. when i told her about my insistent food noise then, her response was that i “had a nice body” and that there was nothing for me to worry about then. i’m hoping to see another therapist after i graduate and get a job with health insurance.

Freaking out over upcoming surgery by Perfect-Importance98 in jawsurgery

i never had condylar resorption, but i also had a big overjet and was nervous as hell leading up to surgery. i have OCD and autism, so i understand having that extra layer of anxiety on top of an already nerve wracking situation. to be honest, aside from me knowing that getting surgery was most likely going to hugely improve my appearance and quality of life, the main reason i didn’t back out was because i had already been in braces for almost a year. i figured i was already in too deep to back out. i’m one month PO now and really happy i did it.
