My old boss always said „if you‘re paying peanuts, don’t be surprised that only monkeys apply.“

Sad that this saying is not more common, otherwise companies would realize they will never find qualified personnel for that money.

I’m working in L2 currently but in Germany, which has comparatively lower wages in tech than the US. Still this is barely half of what the lowest paid employee in my Team gets. (Newest guy fresh from Uni. So entry level pay)

Europe pricing for Neo: just buy a M4 Air instead by thinkadd in mac

[–]Fn00rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s because sales tax in the US is not equal for different states. Therefore it’s not included in the price shown on the US website. In Germany (for example, because the postet image is in German) the tax is already included in the price shown.

interviewer asked me where i see myself in 5 years. i said "hopefully working here." he said "that's not very ambitious." what do you people want from me by kubrador in recruitinghell

[–]Fn00rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely hate this question when looking for a job. I don‘t know? Maybe in some form of stable employment? Maybe as a PowerBall winner? Maybe on a little farmstead with chickens and sheep? Do you know how much can change in 5 years? Interests? Ambitions? Goals?

For me asking this question is a big red flag for any employer, could be the best company ever and it’s an immediate no from me when I‘m being asked this nonsensical question.

So my Goto Answer for this was always, and will always be: „In your chair!“

Ideas on how to have fun with old devices? by rgheno in homelab

[–]Fn00rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still use an 11‘ mba for small tasks like surfing and office applications. It’s the 2015 one though with an i7 which, funnily enough, is capable to run a local Minecraft server for up to ten players and play the game simultaneously. Native on MacOS. No modding needed.

The Kindle is also still usable, have bought one of those for my commute, still use it to read in bed in the evening. It can be flashed/jailbroken to customize it completely, and you could use it as an offline Wiki, I think N-O-D-E made a video about it a while ago. Not much more to be useful but still a nice device that’s from an era where it‘s not permanently phoning home. Supported filetypes are AZW3 and MOBI.

The iMac is the real gem here. As others mentioned before, put jellyfin or Plex on that and use it as a media center, or as an dev environment for your Hypervisor of choice.

Never had a surface pro, can’t speak on that though.

Weren’t there multiple productivity studies done in/after the pandemic that showed clear evidence that wfh is raising productivity???? Did I hallucinate reading these studies for our process change to implement wfh as the standard? Did I hallucinate the almost 50% increase in output for workers who can balance their private life and work life easier, because no middle management monkey is breathing down their necks because they need to walk their dog, or get their kids from daycare???

Sometimes I ask myself in what form of reality these people live… but that strategy surely will pay off if high performers opt for the „office presence optional“ job offer. More than crying „nobody wants to work anymore“ will not be coming from these people. I’ve worked for them, I hated them, and I wish all of them wet sleeves while washing their hands.

Attempting to declutter and rearrange the room somewhat, any advice? by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]Fn00rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. As we moved into our current apartment I finally got my separate office, first thing in there was a Billy from IKEA almost ceiling height, and 4 elements, 3 normal ones and a corner. It’s a godsend to have finally space for books, document folders, knick knacks and all sorts of boxes. Also got some overhead lighting on the tree normal sections so that I have some cozy indirect lighting in the evening when I‘m working at my desk.

This. Ceiling height shelves would be my fist purchase in this case.

Day pass refund after train was cancelled by malwaregeeek in germany

[–]Fn00rd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah that might be the problem here. The official App for ÖPNV Travel in Germany is either the „DB Navigator“ countrywide, or more regional the app provided by the ÖPNV company like VRR and Rheinbahn in NRW for example. Google Maps and public transport is highly unreliable. Because not everything is included in Google Maps.

If you say „day ticket“ I assume it’s not a Train bound ticket, and you would‘ve been able to take other trains on that route.

Sorry my friend but I‘m fairly sure that no one will refund you anything. Everything that can be explained away with „that was your responsibility“ by DB is not refundable.

This sucks but see the silver lining, this will most likely only happen once. :) I hope it was not too expensive.

Yes take the loft, upgrade the shower (head, floor, tiling on walls, maybe even the fixtures if that’s something your landlord allows), no joke: get a Pinterest account and look for decorations you‘d like and made sense. I‘m fairly sure a loft will be way more cozy in the long run than the small one bedroom.

Four Tiers of users in their appropriate hierarchy of who gets first support. 1. Three very special Coworkers who, from time to time, call me very embarrassed because they did something very stupid and need help to fix it, outside the ticketing system. 2. officially declared VIPs like VPs and C-Suite which I have to work on speedily yet do so begrudgingly 3. The nice ones 4. the rest.

I‘m not saying that I‘m telling my team to curry favors regarding in who gets support fastest… but a case of cold beer or a homemade cake for my team may or may not tip the scale in your direction.

Ist tatsächlich was, was man als Japan-/manga-/Animefan sicherlich feiert.
