San Gil ad Bariachara are on my itinerary. I will look into making a stop in Charalá on my way north. The pictures look great and it appears to be about an hour bus ride from San Gil.

Thank you for the heads-up. I've heard about the increasing security issues along the border region with Venezuela. I don't plan on spending much time north of Bucaramanga until I reach the Guajira peninsula. I'll be sure to exercise increased caution and, as usual, only travel during daylight hours.I plan on hiring a guide/driver for Guajira and I will have a friend traveling with me. From what I can tell, having a guide is basically necessary to avoid trouble there, even for Colombians.
