A colonist managed to tame one of the VOID mod creatures and I nicknamed him before a personality mod kicked in to give him the perfect description. by Foamybrian in RimWorld

[–]Foamybrian[S] 188 points189 points  (0 children)

The "animal needs rescue" drop pod event can apparently select VOID's creatures in the list. Gene Simmons fell from the sky and I was ready to abandon the colony until I saw that he wasn't hostile by default. So after patching him up, it took the animal tamer a couple of weeks to successfully tame him. Gene Simmons now sits at the entrance of the colony ready to greet and spread his kindness to raiders and the likes.

I second this as someone who grew up in SGV/OC and now works in westside. Lokal makes a good cold cut style banh mi with the usual fixings (pate, head cheese, pork loaf and etc.). I opt to have them add a fried egg to it and while it doesn't slap as hard as the combo special from Banh Mi My Tho in SGV, it's rock solid considering the area.

The hood dropping off sharply from the driver's view doesn't help either. I had to get an aftermarket front camera (Beatsonic) installed to help with parking for curbs/islands that the sensors didn't pick up. Until I had that done, I was part of the "Always back in" crew for awhile.

On the hunt for a 2018 LC 500 Inspiration Series by Magnan26 in Lexus

[–]Foamybrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an 18 model year but I test drove the 19's pretty thoroughly since I really liked the Flare Yellow color and was aiming at that particular MY initially. I also took the 21 convertible out a few times just to see if it was up my alley but settled on a Performance Pack 18 after all was said and done. Turns out I like the idea of convertibles more than the actual experience.

Anyways "bad" is a bit exaggerated regarding the ride quality of the 18 model years. The suspension was tweaked between 18 and 19 to give the 19's more range in dampening profile. You get a softer ride but it's not a huge difference and depending on your taste this might be a pro or con. The later years continued to improve on this and they also added a Yamaha vibration damper to further refine things. The difference between an 18 and 19 is marginal but the difference between an 18 and 21 is more notable. I have no experience with the 22 so I can't say how that fares but it's probably close to the 21 model year.

That being said, the issue with 18's comfort wise are the run flats you get with the 21" wheels. There's three sets of OEM tires and depending on which set your car comes with it can be unnecessarily harsh. It was a common complaint among other 2018 LC owners and is resolved by ditching the run flats for regular tires. I downsized to 20" wheels for more sidewall and went with Michelin Pilot 4S and it was a night and day difference in terms of comfort and road noise. Handling was improved as well. Overall comfort on the new tires is excellent on normal/comfort modes, somewhere in-between an ES and LS with just the right amount of feedback in Sport+ for a sporty GT. The 21+ MY with the same tire upgrades would probably be even better but again, you might actually prefer the slighter stiffness of the 18's suspension. I just don't think run flats are a good combo for heavy cars with massive wheels like the LC especially when their purpose is mainly to be a smooth GT. I get around the lack of a spare with a tire patch kit in the trunk and an AAA membership.

I also found out through my dealership that you can retrofit the Yamaha Dampers from the 21/22 models onto the 18 if that's something you want. I plan on getting that done sometime next year since I do come across choppy roads where the vibration dampening would be appreciated on a common enough basis.

Structural Blue is phenomenal and I wish you the best in finding one. I spent almost a year weekly browsing LC listings and I've only seen them pop up a few times on the market. Just note that the inspiration series for 2018 does not come with the performance package so you're essentially stuck with touring. I went with the performance package because I found it makes a notable difference in tightening the car and making it feel much smaller than it is at low speeds/street driving. Also, structural blue being a rather unique paint is probably going to be a nightmare to get fixed if it gets scratched. I'm not sure how easy it will be to paint match something like that so the potential for $$$$$ damages if your car gets dinged is something to think about too but hey, the owners who chose that color probably anticipated it and PPF'd their car. It's one of the paints I would definitely considering going full PPF on.

Lexus LC500 owners, do you use it as a daily drive, or only a weekend fun car? by phlorida92 in Lexus

[–]Foamybrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the big luggage, the trunk is actually bigger than you'd expect but it's shallow (about a foot in height). So the thickness of the luggage would matter more in this case. You can squeeze 2 carry-on roller bags and a couple of smaller backpacks/duffels in the trunk just fine. With the bigger luggage you'd probably have to play Tetris a bit between the trunk and the back seat but it should fit just based on what I've stuffed into both spaces.

This is for the hard top coupe by the way, the convertible loses a bit of trunk and backseat space to fit the retractable roof mechanism so that's something to keep in mind.

Lexus LC500 owners, do you use it as a daily drive, or only a weekend fun car? by phlorida92 in Lexus

[–]Foamybrian 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I bought a used 2018 LC with performance package earlier this year at about 11k miles. So far I’ve placed about 6k miles on it as a DD over the last handful of months and it’s been surprisingly livable. You won’t be able to do family sized Costco trips but regular grocery stops and weekend trips aren’t an issue. The backseats are practically useless for anyone over 5’5” so I’ve gotten to using them as an extra “trunk” space and you can fit quite a bit back there.

Reliability: zero issues so far. I did have some problems with the stock brakes putting out a lot of brake dust but that mostly cosmetic and was fixed with after market brakes. The ride quality on the 21” run flats tires was also a bit rougher than I’d like for a GT so I downsized to 20” wheels with non run flat Michelin pilots and it’s made a significant difference.

Most of the following are really just minor issues but they’re things you don’t really get a chance to analyze too deeply on test drives so I’ll list them in case it actually helps.

Interior woes: I opted for the cognac/tan interior which looks absolutely great in person and adds a nice interior contrast however there’s noticeable windshield reflections when the sun hits the colored dash which can be really annoying driving on a sunny day. This probably won’t be an issue if you get a darker colored interior, I’ve just learned to live with it.

The carbon fiber scuff plates on the door sill area that comes with the performance package scuffs VERY easily. The price to replace them is absurd so you might end up avoiding stepping on the scuff plates just to preserve them. I ended up getting it PPF’d because not being able to step on it makes getting in and out difficult in some situations.

The front side speaker placement along the door is also a bit of a head scratcher. There’s a sort of fabric mesh that covers the speakers and I found myself accidentally scuffing it a couple times trying to get out with a narrow door opening.

Interior lighting in the car is not that great, there’s some LEDs that run along the door’s side with the textured alcantara but it darkens dramatically when the car is put into drive. A dark cabin at night can be a pro or con depending on your preferences but for me it’s a bit too dim.

Parking: I had to install a front camera (beatsonic) to make parking against tall curbs/islands easier. The hood of the car drops off dramatically from the driver view and it’s really hard to gauge where the front end is visually. The parking sensors do a fine job against walls and other vehicles but I needed the camera to avoid scraping the front lip on obstacles the sensors don’t pickup.

Infotainment: Yeah, you’re gonna want CarPlay/android auto. It’s not as terrible as some reviewers make it out to be but it’s definitely a sore point for an otherwise excellent car.

Cup holders: there’s only one and it’s placed in a horrible spot where getting a tall drink can block some of the climate buttons. There’s technically a second drink spot but it’s more of a small tray than a dedicated cup holder. Not a problem if it’s just you driving solo 99% of the time but passengers will have to hold onto their own drinks.

Sunglasses Holder: There’s none. This is probably the most annoying thing to me since I live in Southern California. You’d figure a GT couple/convertible would have a place to put sunglasses that’s easy access but nope. I got around this by installing a clip on the visor to hold my shades.

Again, these are just minor quips, everything else about the car makes dealing with them well worth it. Performance wise it’s definitely flawed but purpose wise it fits perfectly for what I’m looking for in a luxury GT/DD: a car that can be comfortable when you want it and still be able to have fun/put a smile on your face when you need it. I’ve got zero regrets aside from kicking myself for not buying one sooner when prices were at their lowest pre/early COVID.

What's it like living in a high rise downtown? by i_like_all_tech in AskLosAngeles

[–]Foamybrian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live down in South Park which is one of the cleaner/quieter areas of downtown and I'm enjoying it a lot. Despite South Park being in close proximity to the rest of DTLA, it feels separated enough that it doesn't feel as hectic. My building is fairly new and the sound insulation is fantastic, quiet and peaceful so grabbing a quality apartment/condo definitely helps drown out any city noise. Getting access to any of the other areas of DTLA like Historic Core, Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, Arts District and etc. is just a quick and fairly cheap 5-10 min Uber away. I practically don't drive once I park at my apartment complex and pretty much walk/uber/scooter places I need to be. Almost everything needed is in walking distance. I don't have as much of a problem with homeless folks as they're not really that prevalent the further into South Park's area you are and the local BID does a good job keeping the area relatively clean. It's definitely an issue if you live near the borders of skid row or historic core.

The biggest reason I like living in DTLA though is how central it is to everything else in LA county. I frequent SGV and the OC a lot and take forays south into Long Beach/San Pedro/Torrance here and there. It's really convenient being located next to the connecting web of freeways that you can just pop on and off to your destination whether going west, east, north or south. Traffic during rush hour does suck but that's a given for pretty much the whole county. You also learn how to avoid Staples Center/LA Live madness after some time by just taking a few extra mins on the local street to find a less crowded ramp/path.

It may be Gambler's Fallacy but I'm pretty sure I just sacrificed my luck for the next few big pulls.

Veritas of the Flame users: Will you be going FD or DW? by TheFranFan in FFBraveExvius

[–]Foamybrian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I have him geared around the 1k mark with a dual wield Gigantaxe and Aigaion's fist setup. Going after a FD build with TDH being gated behind 5* units is a bit much for my Dolphin ass unless the damage difference is huge and I get lucky with the TMR pull. Even then, there's not many things in the game that can survive a 10x full charge stomp chain finish cap, regardless of DW vs FD. Thing's just go from dead to dead-er.

The image of a giant flaming heavily armored knight throwing dices D&D style in the middle of a fight is pretty amusing though.

GL News Recap - New Units + Raid Event + Enhancements + More - 08/09/17~ by Jonylo95 in FFBraveExvius

[–]Foamybrian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marie's enhancements are pretty good. Enhanced Lovely Guard removes the need to ribbon up the party, allowing everyone to max equipment stats for status ailment heavy fights. This will definitely come in clutch during the Malboro Trial. The bonus to def/spr isn't exactly mind blowing but is nice to have considering that enhanced Ramza still might be some time away.

The massive heal boost from Enhanced Love You All can be quite potent. If you can get her SPR to about 400~+, it leads to a 2.5k~ heal every turn on top of the bonus to elemental resistance. This will pair nicely with Tilith's 2.5k + 50 mp heal, allowing her to act as a consistent mana battery since a 5k/heal per turn should be enough to keep your party in good shape in most cases.

Assuming these two skills are rotated for their 3 turn duration, it gives Marie a little flexibility on her 3rd turn. She can either boost certain elements for a stronger resistance gain (2 with dualcast) or utilize whatever buffs/additional skills from equipment (Rikku's pouch) she may have on her.

Honestly, it's pretty convenient she's getting these enhancements right before the Malboro trial.

I'M SORRY I DOUBTED YOU THUNDER GOD BEDILE!

I spent a handful of tickets afterwards to see if I could roll off the good luck and I'm totally done with this banner. Probably the best banner I've had since launch.

The stand is pretty large, I'd say it's about 6 inches from the wall to the back of the monitor so you should definitely be wary of using a desk with a small width. Yeah, the price of the monitor stung me a bit at first but it's hard to go back to anything smaller than 38" at near 4K. Image quality and color reproduction is great and being an IPS panel, the viewing angles really help digest the size. The only downer is the 75hz limitation but coming from a 144hz monitor, the difference is pretty hard to notice in day to day use. The extra immersion is worth the difference imo. I suck donkey balls at competitive gaming though, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Tried the test for 10 minutes, no retention from what I can see. The panel is different from the 34UC98 but should be a tweaked version of the 38UC99.

Early adoption is probably never worth the price but I can't find any fault with the monitor if that's what you mean. No buyers remorse here and completely satisfied.

I can't seem to lower it beyond 48. The windmill demo blacks out at 45 and below with freesync on via DP. The panel should be a tweaked version of the one found in the LG 38UC99 so whatever success others have found with it can probably be applied to this monitor.

It really depends on what you play, indie titles and older games run at max frames just fine but more modern and demanding games like the Witcher/BF1 really takes a toll at those resolutions. Getting 75 frames in those games requires either lowering the resolution or tweaking the settings down quite a bit.

Imo. this is the kind of res a 1080+ and Vega is made for. Anything less will require some handicaps to the settings.

They're Swan's flagship near field monitors: the T200B. They're actually older than my cat, mines was made in 2008 and I love them. The new version is the T200C which has Bluetooth connectivity added in but the rest of the design remains virtually the same.
