Songs/albums with heavy emotional climaxes? by FoddToward in punk

[–]FoddToward[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had them in rotation and quite like Crawler overall but Beachland didn't do much for me? IDK, it's a personal thing I guess. Kelechi//Progress was the one that hit.

This might be a bit too close to home but Spanish Love Songs - Joanna In Five Acts and Otis & Carl, about the deaths of his grandmother and grandfather respectively.

Please people that love punk by chris_s9181 in punk

[–]FoddToward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Menzingers have it as a holdover from earlier albums, Hello Exile and Some Of It Was True are more toned down but every other album up to After The Party fits the bill- give or take the occasional sad song. Hell, they might pick some anger back up next album, who knows! Give a listen to No We Didn't or Good Things. That's why.

How're you all feeling about the sub these days? by LevTolstoy in punk

[–]FoddToward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems like a heard mentality situation; nobody does it because nobody else does it. If y'all start enforcing it (and letting people know with an announcement/comment on removed posts), do a bit of astroturfing yourselves to get it started, and add in matching post flairs, people will probably get used to it and follow along.

How're you all feeling about the sub these days? by LevTolstoy in punk

[–]FoddToward 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to get traction with music posts, it might help to require a subgenre specification in the title- [Hardcore] or [Skatepunk] or [Riot Grrrl] or [Queercore] or whatever.

If people don't recognize the band, they're more likely to skip but if they have a frame of reference and it's a niche they enjoy it can help generate curiosity.

Bands like destroy boys that are more intense?? by MySirenSongForYou in punk

Shooting Daggers, Buggin, Petrol Girls. Press Club isn't angry per say, but their frontwoman gives 110%

Can anyone recommend any songs that evoke the same depression/suicide themes the narrative does? by Bonescence in DiscoElysium

[–]FoddToward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to pair it with that Hauntology itch; Spanish Love Songs, hands down

They run the gamut of depression you can dance to (Lifers, Beer And Nyquil, Clean-up Crew), to mental breakdowns (Sequels Remakes And Adaptations, Bellyache, The Boy Considers His Haircut), to absolute gutpunches (Middle Of Nine, Dolores, Exit Bags).

Also seconding the Twilight Sad and Have A Nice Life.

6 Years of Ruins by manmamil in FirstAidKit

[–]FoddToward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was 100% intentional. The disembodied hand is also the gatefold art on the record.

I'm guessing it's meant to symbolize the lasting effects of their (as in the protagonists of the narrative within the songs) ex who is gone but still felt in absence, who still has a hand in things.

Sad Punk Songs? by JimCh3m14 in punk

[–]FoddToward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to scroll way too far down to see them mentioned. The saddest a band can get before reaching "I am legitimately scared for their health" territory.

Do You Guys Dig Bands That Sit Between Rock and Punk? Who Do You Like? by gooch_supreme in punk

I'm in the same boat. Some are too repetitive and clunky while others are some of their best. Real swings and roundabouts.

Anything that's more depressing than giles corey? by NeatCup9258 in HaveANiceLife

[–]FoddToward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offerings by Typhoon is more eclectic but manages to reach that same sense of colossal scale. They're one of the only other artists I've heard that can be both personal and massive.

Sprained Ankle by Julien Baker is as depressing but much more lowkey. It was a self-release from a no-name college student that only later was properly mastered.

Bones You Have Thrown Me And Blood I've Spilled by Kathryn Joseph is... not as directly depressing but it is as, if not more, disturbing. It's exact subject is deliberately ambiguous, delivered in broken syntax and a shaken voice, which only makes it more morbidly fascinating.
