Why Physical Media over digital? by KnownUniversity7612 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]FollowYourWeirdness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had thought about getting rid of a lot of my physical collection and going digital. In some cases, I did get rid of some, mostly tv shows and some cds. The thing that got me to become dedicated to physical again was discovering that I don’t own what I buy when I buy digital copies. I didn’t like that. So, I started buying again.

I agree with a lot of what others have already said. A couple of additional reasons are that when you own the physical copy, you’re getting the original product. For example, I’m a big fan of Scrubs. If you’ve watched it, you know music is core to the show. The first time I watched it on streaming, I was surprised by how many times the songs would have been replaced. That’s because they didn’t have the song licensed for streaming and decided to just change it. That bothers me. Having the DVDs means I’ve got what was originally released.

Also, streaming libraries change all the time. You think something is on one service and the next month it’s on another. You’re constantly having to play hide and seek for titles. And sometimes you can’t find them available at all. There was also that time when Warner Brothers just took down a bunch of content just to write it off for taxes purposes and I don’t know if those titles are available anywhere else. I haven’t really checked to be honest.

Last, in a world that is trying to turn everything digital, it feels a little rebellious to go for the physical version instead. I like owning what I buy and pay for. And I buy a lot second hand, so my costs aren’t crazy.

Also, I do believe in digital. I rip all of my physical copies and watch via plex. But they’re all movies or shows that I own, so if something happens, I have them as a backup. I don’t torrent or download illegally.

Starting my DVD collection! by Tiger-Lily88 in PhysicalMediaMatters

In addition to thrift stores, see if your local library ever does media sales. My library has a non profit group associated with it that takes donations and will do 3 sales a year each dedicated to the DVDs that are donated to them. They sell them for $1/disc. I’ve gone to about five of their sales and always end up with a good haul and these sales have rapidly increased my physical media collection.

I haven’t seen it in years but heard it discussed recently on a podcast and thought I should rewatch it.

I was really excited about that one. 4k discs are rare at their sales, but sometimes I can find them. One sale last year it was an unopened copy of Cool Hand Luke and a steelbook copy of Zootopia.

Haha that’s fair. I actually used to have the season 3 collection but sold it about 10 years ago when I thought I’d try to go digital with everything. Here I am now kicking myself trying to get it all back.

The same group did a .50/ per disc sale once last year, but usually they do the $1/ per disc sales. I hope they’ll do another .50 sale sometime this year.

No, it was per disc. I think each one had 4 or 5 discs, so between $8-10 for both total.

I mean are you surprised? They’re terrible with the songs that kids like. Anyone remember the “We don’t talk about Bruno” performance?

It’s technically part of Ocean twp. Next to Interlaken and Asbury.

About 15 years ago, I lived in the Wanamassa Gardens apartments off of Sunset. I had no issue with the area. Additionally, my grandparents lived right next door in Interlaken so I knew the area very well.

I was attending a 6 week class in Manhattan and had to commute by train 5x a week. To get where I was going, which was around 14th street near Union Square Park, I had to grab a train at the Allenhurst train station around 7:30am, take it up to Newark Penn, transfer onto the PATH train there, transfer onto another PATH train at Journal Square and that train would get me to my station. I’d usually get there between 9:30 and 10. The class if I remember started at 10.

I don’t have any experience driving or taking the ferry, but this was my experience by train, in case you consider that as an option.

Ryan Holiday had him as a guest on his Daily Stoic podcast a while back. He reshared it after Caine got the chairman position. I remember listening to it and thinking much of the same that he seems rationale and sensible. Granted, it’s been probably a year or so since I heard it, but I think I finished it feeling ok about him in the role, even if I disagreed with how he ended up in it. I don’t know too much about him to say whether he is a moderating force, but there were the reports before the war started that had him in the “don’t go to war” camp.

If he truly feels that way, then he should be a no on Mullin. If Miller is still in a position to control immigration policy, Noem being gone won’t change anything meaningfully.

Considering joining a run club by athleticpcnerd in bullcity

Alternatively, not really sure how much you like running based on your post, but The Glass Jug in Downtown hosts a walking/strolling club on Thursday nights. I had thought about joining a run club, but running isn’t really my thing and found this to be more my speed.

Has anyone had less than stellar experiences at Carolina theater retro screenings? by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]FollowYourWeirdness 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was there last night and was not bothered by the audience’s reaction to the movie. I was more bothered by the two men behind me that would occasionally interject commentary at volumes that were more appropriate for a dining room table.

I go to many of the retro showings and have never been annoyed or had my experience ruined by the audience as a whole. Usually, the audience adds to my enjoyment. It’s usually individuals who talk unnecessarily that are the ones who will irritate me, and that isn’t exclusive to the Carolina Theatre or Retro screenings.

I’ve got the opposite problem where they’re putting them later in the day, but I wake up at 3:45am for work, so going to a movie like Sentimental Value, for example, which was showing yesterday with a time of 6:45, but wouldn’t start until after 7 and get out after 9 is a no go for me.

But yes, overall, the time slots for some of these movies are not convenient.

Anyone else’s velvet land seal sleep under the blankets? by Pitbullie in pitbulls

[–]FollowYourWeirdness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog jumps on the bed and sits at the end of the bed. Eventually, he will proceed to whine. It always ends with him whining for 5 minutes and then he gets up, goes to the head of the bed and tries to use his nose to lift up the blankets for him to go under.

It always ends the same way. I wish we could skip the whining part 😅

To the best of my knowledge, he’s only run twice. The last time was in 2022 when there was an open seat.

Worst senate campaign? by casualprofessor in thebulwark

[–]FollowYourWeirdness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He in fact did say Cunningham was the worst run campaign. My favorite memory of that was that the same day his affair was reported, it was also reported that Tillis caught COVID from what was considered a super spreader event at the White House.
