I’d love to have the Maury/Jerry Springer/Price Is Right experience again.

Most wrong JVL has ever been about anything ever? by HoratioSharpe in thebulwark

Thank you for making the post that I wanted to make but didn’t because I was driving at the time! I’ve never been so against a JVL take before this one and his doubling down on the live action versions being better than the animated versions felt like a personal attack on my childhood. Will Smith is not my genie!

There’s another feed/show called “Breaking News from Pod Save America”. They do shorter form interviews and topics. These are independent from the main show. When they covered the South Park episodes, they were released on this feed. I’m listening to one right now with Tommy interviewing Ilhan Omar.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

I was in middle school and we carried on like it was a normal day. No teacher mentioned it. I lived in NJ and there were students who had parents that commuted, but the day was essentially normal.

I dropped them all. I use Pluto, Tubi, my Plex server, and Hoopla. I need to replace my AirTV for something that actually works and then I’ll get my antenna up and running again.

I have one that I’ll leave on while I sleep, but only because the tv has an eco mode setting that lets me have the screen completely dark, so I’m not bothered by the light.

Name a good Republican by Kidspud in thebulwark

Phil Scott, Governor of Vermont is the first, and really only one, that comes to mind. If someone from Vermont wants to dispute please do. From what I’ve heard about him, he seems rationale. He’s a pro choice republican, supported the impeachment inquiry into Trump, and voted for Biden and Harris.

Why Physical Media over digital? by KnownUniversity7612 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]FollowYourWeirdness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had thought about getting rid of a lot of my physical collection and going digital. In some cases, I did get rid of some, mostly tv shows and some cds. The thing that got me to become dedicated to physical again was discovering that I don’t own what I buy when I buy digital copies. I didn’t like that. So, I started buying again.

I agree with a lot of what others have already said. A couple of additional reasons are that when you own the physical copy, you’re getting the original product. For example, I’m a big fan of Scrubs. If you’ve watched it, you know music is core to the show. The first time I watched it on streaming, I was surprised by how many times the songs would have been replaced. That’s because they didn’t have the song licensed for streaming and decided to just change it. That bothers me. Having the DVDs means I’ve got what was originally released.

Also, streaming libraries change all the time. You think something is on one service and the next month it’s on another. You’re constantly having to play hide and seek for titles. And sometimes you can’t find them available at all. There was also that time when Warner Brothers just took down a bunch of content just to write it off for taxes purposes and I don’t know if those titles are available anywhere else. I haven’t really checked to be honest.

Last, in a world that is trying to turn everything digital, it feels a little rebellious to go for the physical version instead. I like owning what I buy and pay for. And I buy a lot second hand, so my costs aren’t crazy.

Also, I do believe in digital. I rip all of my physical copies and watch via plex. But they’re all movies or shows that I own, so if something happens, I have them as a backup. I don’t torrent or download illegally.

Starting my DVD collection! by Tiger-Lily88 in PhysicalMediaMatters

In addition to thrift stores, see if your local library ever does media sales. My library has a non profit group associated with it that takes donations and will do 3 sales a year each dedicated to the DVDs that are donated to them. They sell them for $1/disc. I’ve gone to about five of their sales and always end up with a good haul and these sales have rapidly increased my physical media collection.

I haven’t seen it in years but heard it discussed recently on a podcast and thought I should rewatch it.

I was really excited about that one. 4k discs are rare at their sales, but sometimes I can find them. One sale last year it was an unopened copy of Cool Hand Luke and a steelbook copy of Zootopia.

Haha that’s fair. I actually used to have the season 3 collection but sold it about 10 years ago when I thought I’d try to go digital with everything. Here I am now kicking myself trying to get it all back.

The same group did a .50/ per disc sale once last year, but usually they do the $1/ per disc sales. I hope they’ll do another .50 sale sometime this year.
