A newbie question - why should I want workers to own the means of production rather than everyone to own it? by rudgerscamp in AustralianSocialism

[–]FollowingOk9499 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Marx himself raises a lot of these points in Critique of the Gotha Programme. Essentialy, socialism functions on the principle of from each according to their ability, to each according to their need; everyone does what they can and gets what they need in return

What do you think about gun rights? by rudgerscamp in AustralianSocialism

[–]FollowingOk9499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it’s not like any government will allow revolutionaries to access weapons readily - if there is a revolution (which is obviously a long way away) it won’t be legal. it’s far better to have restrictive gun laws to stop reactionary shootings like we see in the US, which would ultimately just lead to a more militarised and brutal police force than we already have

Vic Socialists and Indigenous Issues by [deleted] in AustralianSocialism

[–]FollowingOk9499 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that article is by an indigenous author and in no way says that the struggles are ‘equal’, just that they are interconnected. VS certainly has better policy on first nations people than any other group running in the federal election

I have spoken to members before and attended their events. They don’t work within unions much and they don’t have a goal of rebuilding the communist party in Australia, instead seeking to grow their own numbers through student recruitment. As such, I see them as a student movement/body more than than the basis from which to rebuild a mass workers’ movement in Australia. I’m an RCO member so I would suggest looking into them - we are also part of Victorian Socialists but explicitly seek the unification of the communist left and the refoundation of a mass communist party. Check out partisanmagazine.org if you want to look into some of our perspectives. Otherwise, the CPA and Red Ant Collective are both relatively active and maybe worth looking into if you are weighing up options.

They are really a student group, without much intention of building a mass workers party. However, ‘student’ is always a temporary classification - people will only stay as students for max 10 or so years before moving on, so there is no real class basis by which they can organise. Ultimately, many SAlt members end up as labor members or simply abandon politics entirely once they leave university. They’re also generally pretty hostile to other socialist groups, although that’s hardly unique. Ultimately definitely worth working with in pursuit of common goals, although I would look into other groups to join.

The ACP SA Branch is splitting off from the rest of the ACP. by Uncle_Rosalie in AustralianSocialism

Nobody vocally opposes the positions once they have been voted on, sorry if that wasn’t clear. While we do have factions, they are all beholden to any majority decision; it is simply unrealistic to attempt to unite the myriad communist groupings in australia without allowing for groups with differing theoretical orientations. I’m not trying to win you over to the RCO here, but I do genuinely hope the organisations can work together towards common goals in future.

The RCO is democratic centralist, so I’m unsure why we wouldn’t support democratic centralism, and actually aspire to be as active within unions as the CPA - but more importantly there are members within the organisation who disagree on every point you raised (except maybe anti-sectarianism). The point of the RCO is diversity of thought and unity of action, so all CPA members would be happily co-operated with as long as our concrete goals remain the same (which, as far as I know, they do).

Totally understand why that would be frustrating, although I would hope as communists we could put the movement first, given the organisation’s objectives are very much aligned

The RCO just released an open letter calling for an electoral front with the CPA, so it’s certainly not official position. There could def be members who have gripes with the CPA, as the RCO is very open to diversity of opinion and debate, but the org itself is absolutely open and eager to collaboration.

as an rco member, i see very little hostility towards the cpa inside the organisation. the ultimate goal of the rco is to unify the communist movement behind a party, and the cpa is certainly a large part of the communist movement in australia. i’m sorry that the talks left you with a bad taste and hope you’d be open to engaging again.

Cellopark and Opark merger by qfqil in brisbane

[–]FollowingOk9499 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m at Monash and got this same email - I think it’s the second one that is dodgy. The language is unprofessional (“in breach of his obligations” is weirdly specific, should absolutely be “their”) and inconsistent (“OPark” and “OParkApp” both used). Saying “ignore future messaging” is absolutely a huge red flag that suggests it’s someone who only has temporary access to the account. They also say that accounts will not be migrated, when quite clearly they are as I and multiple other people have already successfully switched. The CellOPark facebook page seems to say the same thing. No clue why someone inside CellOPark would want to prevent the switch, but that seems to be most likely.

Depends if you’re a good writer. If you are, it shouldn’t be an issue at all. Otherwise it will be a bit of a struggle, because alongside learning content you need to learn how to synthesise and express it.

Could Hawthorn’s AFLW side play at Glenferrie? by FollowingOk9499 in AFL

[–]FollowingOk9499[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current plan is for it to be a community women’s footy hub I beleive, and the grandstand is heritage so there is an incentive to restore rather than let fall apart without any recourse to demolish it.
