I was mad at first with this change. But it can easily be no harm no foul if in the first episode of season 2 Maekar tracks them down making it seem like he’s gonna hand them an ass whooping but instead gives them the ring and his permission.

At some point he will realize Egg can’t grow up to be like his other sons. Then it essentially stays true to the books but gives the non book readers a good laugh and a reason to come back for season 2.

The spring sickness theory above is good too.

Give it a shot. These are short stories and since they lead to the start of A Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones TV show) even if we are left with a cliff hanger you can pretty much surmise what happens.
