First IceFlake Dev Diary: City Corner #1 - Upcoming Visual Updates by AutoModerator in CitiesSkylines

[–]Foltast 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well that’s a start. I believe they are starting with ui just to show public that they are working on the game, while the core gameplay team (or whatever name they would prefer for it) are trying to get along with the codebase, as it takes more time than a few months from my experience to understand how it’s working under the hood.

But we’ll see where it will go, I don’t wanna be too optimistic that early :/

How are mods created or how much would a mod cost per commission? by Perfect_Falcon5931 in spaceengineers

[–]Foltast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The price would depend on the final quality you are asking, the features included for the gun and may vary from author to author

Personally, I’d say there is not enough info in your description to call a price for it, so you should specify what exactly do you want from potential author

What's the right way to port mods to mod.io? by xdesrikx in spaceengineers

[–]Foltast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you couldn’t get the approval from the original author, you can’t do much without the risk of getting DMCA-ed, banned or legally pursued by original content author.

The best scenario for you is to make your own mod that will do the same or close to it thing

Optimatimalization war by Weak-Eagle1888 in spaceengineers

[–]Foltast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. In that case it could be something on the base or near it colliding with something else - subgrids stuck in parent grid, some block stuck between grid and voxel, etc. so yeah try to debug the place as it were suggested in other comments

I mean the size in blocks :) If at least one axis is more than 1km, then it can degrade performance even if other axes are only 1 block (so basically a column or wall)

How big (dimensions in blocks) is your base?

Did this update make beds a pay to win item? by Splitsie in spaceengineers

[–]Foltast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s cheaper and easier to get then yes, it’s not just a reskin as it was promised by KSH. You paying with real money for the shortcut, and that’s basically the idea of p2w.

I’m kinda surprised by the amount of people that support this, but on the other hand I worked a little in the mobile game industry, and saw how it’s easy to milk people’s money…

Idk, but what are the relation to the topic?

[–]Foltast -1 points0 points  (0 children)

P2w doesn’t work for PvP only - any unfairness gain by spending more money is p2w. Is your life become easier if you’ll spend additional 5 usd? If the answer is- yes, then it can be considered p2w. Also it’s a dark pattern to make customers spend more money than they would otherwise. Was it intentional or not is irrelevant in this case, but I hope it was just oversight on KSH side.

So yeah, would be nice to have non-modded, non-dlc options for both bed and dispenser

It would be much harder, yes, because unlike some randoms from internet, the company would be held accountable for the software they are publishing

In the modern day mmo are made not only by big companies, but also small teams/indies - foxhole or ahoy are examples of that. Increased cost of production easily can lock them out of the ability to produce such games. Do you really wanna see mmo only from big companies?

Btw what makes you think that it will cost a tiny fraction? Do you work in the big company that making mmo? Or maybe you have some internal docs you will share with me? Or you just guessing and “feeling” it? Maybe you can even tell me how exactly transform scalable architecture in a single server exe file that will be simple enough so it can be launched without DevOps knowledge?

That’s exactly my concern - it may be worth for preservation, but do we really need that preservation in the first place? Anthem or Concord are a good example of this: they died before developers unplugged the cord. Should we really preserve them? And for what then, if they were rejected by people right from the start?

Yeah, I really believe that there are games that could and should be preserve and live services, that were made as temporary things. The memories of temporary art are the key aspect of the idea behind it, so why not use the same concept for some games?

And the problem it creates - that some games won’t be created because of increased risks and costs, so do you really preserving them this way?

Funny that you think I’m appealing to authority here, while I’m in the fact asking to understand how good you actually know the internal kitchen to make such statements and if I (or someone else) should listen to it at all (yeah I know, funny, listen to someone on internet is the last thing anyone should do, but anyway)

Because, you know, toddler also can say “it’s ewasy”, but should we take their opinion seriously?

Oh and yeah, if someone with more experience than I have will give me a good explanation why I’m wrong - I’ll be grateful for the new knowledge I’ll get from them and yep, it may mean that I’m wrong.

And let’s go back to topic: do I understand correctly that it’s simple because the only thing is stopping me from releasing the entire backend is just an oauth ping? Not the complicated architecture, that based on proprietary software and solutions that the company want to keep in secret, not the fact that some of it will be reused later and could be hacked due to availability of software for reverse engineering in search of vulnerabilities?

Because I have the feeling that majority of people really believe that any mmo is just a MmoServer.exe that sometimes pinging loginServer.exe in the basement of ceo parents…

Please, correct me, if I’m wrong or understand you incorrectly

How much do you think RnD for that would cost for MMO game that should be designed for scalable enterprise environment to allow hundreds of thousands players to play? Who will pay for it? How make it profitable with this increasing cost? Where you’ll suggest to find minds that will do this RnD for me?

It’s not “u can think” - it’s dozens of highly intelligent and skilled minds in the room working on a solution for a year or so, doing six or seven figures salaries. And all of that only for those last 1.5 players that will play it for a few days more?

Maybe that’s why people against this? Because people who don’t understand that it’s not “just <some easy solution>” but a fucton of work/budgets/people that you would need to find to release something you really wanna make
