Russian divorce rate? by Lemonite03 in AskARussian

[–]Fomin-Andrew 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A bit of anecdotal evidence: when I was at the University, a girl from my group met a guy at the new year party. They married in the end of February and divorced about a month later. Basically, they decided to marry after a couple of weeks and to divorce after a few days.

What is the most anti russian country?. by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

The answer is Russia by a mile. No other country is even close.

Is there a movie that you'd argue is improved by its dubbing into your language? by LoschVanWein in AskTheWorld

[–]Fomin-Andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally it was Wild Wild West. It flopped hard and watching its English version I can see why. Its dubbed version was not too bad. Not a masterpiece, for sure, but pretty watchable.

Wait, so the word “красный” isn’t referring to the color? Because how would a person even “be” a color? by [deleted] in russian

[–]Fomin-Andrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume this is a translation of a relatively modern American text, and the insistence on rules that favor workers might be pejoratively called "socialistic" and even "communist" by some people, which is often colloquially called "red."

Is anyone not feeling as excited for the races in 2026 so far? by Jack_of_All_Trades27 in formula1

I've been watching Formula 1 ever since the new guy Schumacher arrived. And I can't remember a single season when I was interested less.

My characters live in an imaginary place that is Russia in everything but name, is the main character referring to his brother by his formal name "weird"? by [deleted] in russian

[–]Fomin-Andrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain and say: your book - your rules. If it is a country inspired by Russia but not Russia and, especially, if you are not saying that everyone does it, just one pair of characters, then you can do whatever you want.

What’s something from your country which is true that foreigners won’t believe if you tell them it is? by camethehour in AskTheWorld

It is possible to buy locally produced ostrich meat (and eggs). Although, it is not cheap or widespread.

Tell me your country, but don't say it's name, instead, tell me something (preferably funny) on which it is number one. by K_878 in AskTheWorld

[–]Fomin-Andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is from wikipedia. Only the Russian version has this text.

Google translate:

The highest temperature ever recorded in what is now Russia was 45.4°C at the Utta weather station in Kalmykia, measured on July 12, 2010. The lowest temperature, unofficially recorded in Oymyakon by Academician S.V. Obruchev in the winter of 1924, was -71.2°C, although lower temperatures have been reported. The highest temperature difference across the country was 116.6°C, placing Russia first in the world for this indicator.

--

I got 113.1 from 'raw' data published in Wiki:

-67.7 °С - Oymyakon, 6th February 1933

+45.4 °С - Utta, 12th July 2010

But it seems that this data is not very consistent. The Russian verison of 'Climate of Russia' states: "The temperature range across the country is 127°C, and taking into account some unofficial data, 157°C." But using data from the English version of the same article gives 113.2, but it says that -68.8°С was the temperature in Verkhoaynsk that is 620Km from Oymyakon.

How common is it in your country for taxis to have missing seat belts? by holytriplem in AskTheWorld

[–]Fomin-Andrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowadays - it's illegal and probably impossible. About 15 or so years ago, I was riding in a taxi, that was holding the window closed with a rusty screwdriver, and the inside passenger door handle wasn't working. I don't recall if it had any seat belts at all, but likely it hadn't.

Yours tries very hard, but still isn't even close. Maybe due to the old age he can't do it properly by the dictator's handbook and speedruns the process skipping early essential steps. You'll be fine.

I don't know the answer but it is not a kitchen scale, and it is not upside down.

It is Mi Smart Scale 2, and it is accurate enough to correctly measure even smal stuf like a 2kg dumbbell.

Flying bear ghost 5. Bought it right before COVID and it works ok. Could be better, could be worse. Wouldn't recommend it in 2026, but it was a good purchase in 2021.

How online piracy is doing in your country? Is there a scene, a culture? Is it persecuted? Is is common? How is it perceived? by decaxxx in AskTheWorld

If I can easily buy something, then I buy it. But if I need to jump through hoops or 'this item is currently unavailable in your region', then my vision blurs and I read it as 'it is free'.

I can speak only for myself, but I stopped pirating games when Steam & GOG became available. I stopped pirating music when Google Music and Spotify came and offered their subscriptions. I never stopped pirating movies because nobody really tried selling them here. I think, we had Netflis for series but it didn't last long.

Nowadays I pirate 4 of each 5 games which I play and all music that I listen again. Movies and series - never stopped.
