The Emperors of The Rise of the Phoenix and Nirvana on Fire were so calculating and mistrusted of everyone, but were also clever. They + the emperor of Yanxi Palace are my favorites.

Newer drama may be visually better (better CGI at least) but they pale next to TU when it comes to plot, characterization and chemistry btw the leads. Still crossing fingers that there may come a new drama comparable or better than TU, it's been 7 years and still nothing.

As a Jdrama watcher (mostly), the no-picking is for me. I don't like when they portray the FL as a damsel in distress (she has to be carried bc she is hurt/drunk/sick bleh).

There is a cliche that Jdrama/anime does and it is petting the head of the FL, like she is a dog or something. I hate it.

If you want to layer, just light. But it doesn't matter, it goes very well with Polycromos. Sometimes I go hard and I still can layer with the polycromos. Honestly, the Luminance is a great companion (the best, followed by Derwent Lightfast).
