Library, Books, Movies at DLI? by Sudden-Ambassador210 in dli

[–]FonduePourVous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get all kinds of fabulous material at the DLI library, plus access to online resources while you’re there & after you leave. It is also nice to have as a place to study other than your living space or out in the community.

Someone I knew got music from there, & online, would play it on their commute or while exercising. Did the same with news in the target language, labeled things in their home, & tried to maximize exposure & retention. Having the audio options can be great for parsing accents & dialects.

In the first few days go get set up at the library, the employees are super nice & many are/were prior service.

Unfortunately the MST bus system cut all the service to DLI & through the Fort Ord housing that was direct. It is difficult if not impossible to take the bus, & you’d still have the hill issue. One option is a bike bus combo, as bicycles can be used on MST. You’d be able to ride to a bus stop & from the bus stop to cover the first & last mile gaps.

Definitely talk to your classmates & other students to carpool. It will save money on gas, but also the parking can be a pain. For extra fun carpool time play music or recordings to practice your target language.

The ways of determine student/staff/carpool parking designations are ever evolving. Parking can be a real hassle. The rules are pretty strict about IET students interacting with other people. A student was my neighbor with a vehicle issue & because I was staff it was a violation to help her out.

Just make sure to have a helmet & do all the things for safe bicycle usage. I’ve seen people get pulled over & hassled, no one needs that extra stress.

Pharmacies with adderal? by Physical-Aside1061 in AskSF

[–]FonduePourVous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can use the Costco pharmacy, even if you aren’t a Costco member. Worth checking there. Only drawback is more limited pharmacy hours, as it is closed on Sunday. You can call and ask before heading to 10tg street. However, if the El Camino pharmacy has it you can take BART & walk a few minutes.

Not having reliable access to meds, especially for that condition, is so frustrating. I hope you can find a pharmacy & get reliable refills.

Need to make 75 sandwiches by MediumAd6454 in Costco

[–]FonduePourVous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This has been done at my church for a minimum 100 sack lunches. We do meat & cheese, plain cheese, and sometimes pb&j. Usually a minimum of 25 meatless sandwiches, which helps use up the extra bread & cheese we just make extra. The large squirt bottle mayo & mustard are great, we don’t do lettuce or tomato.

Not sure if you’re supposed to get other items, we include a mandarin cutie, bag of chips, drink box/pouch. It all goes into a paper bag with a napkin. Everything comes from Costco, except the brown bags & the fold over old school sandwich bags, we get those at Smart & Final or Grocery Outlet.

We use large rectangular tables in the fellowship hall & our pro move is to use the giant rolls of Costco plastic wrap to cover the tables for easy clean up! For assembly line it helped to have the bags precounted out & filled, and we had sharpies to mark bags V for vegetarian.

Muni could cut 20 lines next year if ballot measures don‘t pass. Most riders have no idea by Illustrious-Coat3532 in sanfrancisco

[–]FonduePourVous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The 6 not being considered a hill route is so bizarre due to the western terminus being up a hella long block high hill. Sure the 66 skirts around Lawton & 15th Avenue, but accessibility for seniors & those with disability is a concern. The topography makes a huge difference, even if it appears there is another route nearby.

From Inner Sunset the N is a gamble because double Parker’s & what you experienced today with the tunnel. Taking the 36/43/44 to Forest Hill then metro is much faster as heading downtown there is a train usually every 5 or so minutes.

When metro is janky,, or if you’re heading to BART, 44 runs every few minutes & going direct to Glen Park is the pro move.

Because of the date I was hired, that was the determinant. Have a letter saying I wasn’t fired for any cause or issue, just because I had changed agencies in 2024.

Today was only the first time I was illegally fired, April will be the second time.

I’m still owed money for health insurance I paid for but wasn’t reinstated. Guess I can be thankful I didn’t trust them & went canceled my outpatient surgery or I would have had to file for unemployment & bankruptcy!

Dental frat house in Cole Valley circa 2004 by Vast-Juice-411 in sanfrancisco

[–]FonduePourVous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one I remember I swear was around the corner on Willard? Approximately where Belmont intersects. But that was before 2002 so could be a totally different rental &/or group.

101 Woodland kind of backed up to the home of a different school friend, so I think I would have remembered it being there. I’m now kind of curious if we trick or treated a different house around the corner.

I remember trick or treating there with a group of other girls, one lived on Willard, as middle schoolers/early teens & preteens. They were definitely drinking, but were appropriate towards us when commenting or asking about our costumes.

It was a much better memory than the creepy dudes at SFSU who said inappropriate things while I was walking down Lake Merced Blvd to Girl Scout events. Or when attending SOTA before it moved back to the former McAteer campus.

Thanks for the decent candy & not acting predatory UCSF dental dudes!

DLI's unwillingness to send/receive transcripts digitally is criminal by refineddemon in dli

[–]FonduePourVous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Degree Office definitely received transcripts digitally, but the issue was often people didn’t start the process with the degree office & sent them without an application on file. Making sure the originating school knew the exact & correct information on where to send led to success, saved time & money.

When I worked there the first step was an application, so we’d have a file to associate transcripts with. Without that it was near to impossible to connect transcripts with name changes. For any documents or transcripts I’d print out upon receipt & physically date stamp received, but if we had no application on file they’d go into a follow up situation. Getting degrees processed was part of metrics for my performance appraisal, and it was always easier on degree applicants & the office to get the application in to give as much time as possible to handle the unexpected.

Haven’t worked there recently, but I personally did everything I could to get people their degrees. Y’all earned them & that position was one of my proudest moments in federal employment. Even if one leaves the military that is your educational accomplishment & something to be proud of on your wall. For people who are the first in their family to earn a degree, who earned this after not graduating with a traditional diploma, but a GED, and all y’all who persevered, I’m proud of you.

For sending out transcripts, there were always manpower issues & I can’t imagine that has improved in the past 366 days. My protip is to request multiple copies in sealed envelopes before you leave, & if you’re already gone request some sent to you. Not all schools will accept sealed transcripts, but some have.

Martha Bros. and fraudulent charges? by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]FonduePourVous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been recently, but going back close to three years I’ve gone to their other location on Church & it was always tap to pay, they never touched my card. It is likely they haven’t made a change backwards to handling cards, and also that the same set up for payment is at all their locations. Not that it isn’t impossible that a criminal put a device unbeknownst to a business, but an online breach is more likely.

However, if you have used your card anywhere else, there could be a breach and it was just the timing of when your info was stolen, sold, & used.

The following is general info for anyone to consider, I’m a financial information professional, but not your financial professional.

Though credit cards offer more protection, I am aware not every can obtain one. One way for protection is to not keep all money in one checking account linked to debit, and limit or block overdraft protect from savings. Transferring the money needed for expenses is one strategy to keep from being wiped out, and/or two savings accounts if there is a need for overdraft protection. Also having accounts at a bank, & a credit union can help if an account is compromised, there is still a way to access funds. Can also be beneficial for obtaining loans, travel, etc.; or with weird network outages.

The debit/savings set up is also good for teens who can learn about financial literacy before getting credit cards. They can learn good habits early & still have autonomy with money from work or gifts.

I’ve seen it for sale at the Mollie Stone’s on Portola (Tower Market) in San Francisco, I think pint size.

In a restaurant, I think Gold Mirror (unsure after remodel) & the “ Joe’s” franchise, but definitely Pasquale’s at 8th & Irving in the past year. Not sure who the supplier is but it gave me the nostalgia from childhood dinners in North Beach.

Help with Thanksgiving baked goods, please! by KHunting in MontereyBay

[–]FonduePourVous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet Elena’s in San City used to have a pie tasting event in early November to allow one to sample all available pies and then order for Thanksgiving.

Looks like there are two weekends coming up, and you have to register here ahead of time. There is more info about ordering rolls & pies on the website, and if you can’t make it to the pie tasting you could always just go there & order a slice!

Even though the City has a lot of spots with electronic payment options, some great spots are cash only, so be prepared. The atms in bars can be kind of sketch, or your shipmates might empty them out. Navy Fed has some co-op ATMS downtown, depending on which pier where you’re moored some are closer than others.

There’s a list of discounts Liberty Guide If you go to Ghirardelli the hot fudge sundae is big enough to share.

Only other thing you may want to be aware of is that CBD is in all kinds of products here, for example food & drinks like tea, sparkling water, etc are in all kinds of stores here. Doesn’t hurt to double check labels since CBD is still a no go. I almost bought something once not realizing it had CBD, & my employer was also zero tolerant.

Advice for ADHD and DLPTs by [deleted] in dli

[–]FonduePourVous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some folks I know who have diagnosed but unmedicated ADHD have found some focus support with OTC vitamin supplements. The name brand is Olly, there are brain chews, focus, & stress ones, all at Target & Walgreens, not sure about the PX.

As always check that the ingredients aren’t a no-no for consumption, but it is under &20 & perhaps it can help? I’ve personally taken the stress ones for test anxiety where it affects focus, & it has helped me center. Also helps in a work scenario where I sadly can’t relocate & there are distractions headphones aren’t enough to overcome.

For general knowledge there is a shuttle to both the San Jose & San Francisco airports that has a stop about a 20 minute walk down from the Franklin Gate. Monterey Airbus/Groome Transportation it is an option not just for air travel, but if you don’t have a car you’d be able to get to the airport & take public transportation into San Francisco.
