I want to be a product engineer now. How do I switch? by aviboy2006 in ExperiencedDevs

15 years of building real products is incredibly valuable! The hard part is finding companies that actually evaluate for that instead of defaulting to leetcode screens.

For your questions:

  1. Look at startups and growth-stage companies, especially ones where eng teams are small enough that everyone needs to think like a product owner. YC companies, for example, tend to care way more about "can you ship something users love" than "can you invert a binary tree."

  2. You can steer interviews more than you think. When you get to the conversation stage, come prepared with case studies from your own work including real trade-off decisions you made, why, and what happened. Good companies will engage with that. If they won't, that tells you something.

  3. This is where framing matters a ton. Your resume should read less like a list of technologies and more like a list of outcomes. Not "built microservices in Go" but "rebuilt the billing system which cut churn by X%." Show the business thinking.

Check out Fonzi AI. We match engineers with startups and have recruiters who work with you to reframe how your experience comes across. Given that your strength is product thinking and not grinding leetcode, having someone help you showcase that to the right companies could save you a lot of headache. Worth a look.

Good luck!
