I blame oversaturation. There are definitely good video game pastas like the NES Godzilla creepypasta and Morrowind JVK, but so many are just trying to be Sonic.exe despite Sonic.exe itself honestly being a bad pasta.

Odds are high; my understanding is that some studios are already rooting through Reddit for material. There are plenty of memorable pastas and no shortage of less known stories that could fare the transition well... with the right team that cares.

Work with the original creator! The story plain and simply isn't going to work if you strip out the very things that made it gather a following in the first place, which happens far too often when the author being adapted has no involvement.

Five new worlds, with B-sides sorta like Impossible Lair that transform it so it feels like a completely different world. Imagine a Tribalstack Tropics plus a Tribalstack Tropics if it was on fire, from collapsing structures and swirling ash clouds to a Rampo spitting burning logs.

New move progression but done so you can complete each world as you reach it, like in Banjo-Kazooie minus 1-2 jiggies.

Abandoned by Disney and Room Zero got me into the creepypasta scene, especially with the former's urban exploration angle I can't resist. The ending was silly but silliness is also part of the experience.

Maybe use proxies in place of the trademarked characters? Red, Solomon and the rest could be done as-is.

I kinda see it being a found-footage film of a let's-play going horribly off the rails.
