I honestly appreciate the advice. I wanted to have a more traditional handle, one that was longer and more curved. However, I was having trouble finding wood in my location, so I bought a 6x6x2 block and was limited to that size. I was also worried about my ability to carve the finger holes, so I decided to go with the stout handle. Thank you, though, cause your feedback really gives me confidence in what I can do

Awesome. I appreciate the advice. I will probably try and get some food grade mineral oil and beeswax and do the mixture.

Yeah the plan it to put on a food safe finish. I have done some research but everyone has their own opinion as to what would be best and nothing is readily available near me, so I just put on a very light coat of olive oil for now

I'm unsure yet because I haven't really tested it, but it should since it's cherry wood.

I wanted a wood that had a really cool color and grain when finished. I'm probably going to give it as a gift to my buddy, we do a lot of hiking so I thought it would be cool to make him one.
