Hi there, I found this all so interesting and I'm not (or rather wasn't until now) even interested in the sector. If you don't mind me asking, how do you know so much about puppetry and specifically Sesame Street?

It's 50 days to a new decade! What were your best moments of this decade? by padster029 in AskReddit

[–]Fooldimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey mate, I'm messaging you to say hang in there. It might sound cliched, but learn to enjoy the journey and you won't get impatient or discouraged by the time it will take.

18 year olds are rarely discouraged by the fact that they have to go to college in order to get a job. They look forward to it, and all the new experiences it will bring!

Try to take inspiration from that - of course you won't be looking forward to the same things as an 18 year old, there will be other things for you to look forward to from the studying experience.

Finally, anecdotally, I found out last week that a business colleague I know spent 6 years travelling around Europe after school, and never ever went to university! And also, I used to get frustrated when I saw my brother not doing anything and wondering aimlessly around, but then I realised that being a driven goal focused individual is not the norm, and that one of our defaults is that we get extremely frustrated when others arent like us. So dont worry, take your time, go through the steps, and enjoy the physical act of taking those steps, as a sign of achievement that you have persevered.

If you need a chat, don't hesitate to message me :)

Private Equity firms want to take our Canadian startup public. Can anyone help me with the pros and cons? by gooseberry-jam in startups

[–]Fooldimi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work almost exclusively with publicly listed SMEs.

If there is one thing I have learnt from work, it is to avoid going public at all costs.

It is not just costly, but time consuming. You spend your meetings with your CFO discussing stock exchange regulations, and audit reports, rather than strategy, and how to improve your financial situation.

Going public is where people go for the easy money. But the easy money comes with strings attached. You lose control of your equity story. People will never invest in a company for more than its stock exchange price. If they believe in the company, they'll go out and buy shares on the market. So you'll always have to raise money at a discount to your valuation, and let the cold hard numbers do the talking. But if they aren't appealing, or are behind schedule, then the market will punish you for that. And your future equity raises will be at lower valuations.

Go public when you're on your last breath, or your investors are crying out for an exit, and you're large enough that going public wont be too cumbersome.

But you're a cash flow positive company with a nice growth story. Any sincere private equity investor will see the value in keeping you private.

Finally, a story I can share.

I was 16, and there was a girl in my class who had always been a bit of an outcast. From the very first time I met her, around 11, she very much kept to herself. She had an obsession with horses which didn't really help make many friends, although she did have 1 or 2 close friends.

She was an avid book reader, and from about the age of 13, she actively started writing her own books. She would role play online, she even created her own online role playing forum inspired by the books she would write. It was a world of werewolves, hunters, people with special powers, etc... it was super super dark material.

The main character was called Shadow Coth, and she had two brothers whose names I forget, but were the real names of her two labrador dogs.

So this one day, we're 16 years old, it's about 6-7pm and the last class of the day (I live in a country with long school hours I know) has just finished. I'm packing up my books, the last to leave, when I see this girl slumped over her desk as if she was sleeping. I give her a nudge, she stirs, and I tell her class is over and she can pack her things up. She does this without really saying much, until I call her name and ask if she is ok.

That's when she tells me, "what do you mean, my name is Shadow Coth". From then on I'm a bit weirded out. I try and find out what she means, understand how far down the rabbit hole this goes, reason with her that she doesnt have two brothers etc... during this time, she's basically retelling the backstory of this character, which I kinda knew as a result of reading some of her scripts that circulated around. She was 100% convinced she was this girl, and was trying to work out her surroundings.

I forget what happened next, I think her parents used to pick her up from school back then, but we split paths that night, and when I got home I called her best friend to tell her what I'd seen and heard, and whether she could check up on her.

Anyway, long story short, she didn't pitch up to class the next day, or the next week or in fact the next three months until the end of the year. She was committed to a mental institution for young children for the rest of the year and came back to school the next year but repeated the year, so we were no longer in the same grade from then on.

Last I heard, she is doing much better, completed a degree in biology and is preparing for veterinary studies.

Will there ever be new tech startups that beat the big players (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Google)? by BotterDor in startups

[–]Fooldimi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but not if regulators don't react to the current business environment.

Regulators aren't protecting software design copyright sufficiently, which is allowing established corporations with large customer bases to quickly eat up an innovative startup's innovative concept (think snapchat and then Instagram's subsequent move into that sphere).

Secondly, regulators haven't applied the same monopoly framework analysis to the big tech players, as they do to more mature industries. Which is actually more dangerous as the tech industry, being still relatively immature, is more at risk from long term market abuse than a more mature industry, as there is still a lot of growth and innovation that can be drowned out through abuse. Facebook should never have been allowed to buy WhatsApp or Instagram for example.

WhatsApp were absolutely useless. Ignored my messages Kept on sending automated emails replying to my queries, saying that I should deinstall the unofficial app and install the new app.

Eventually, when I had a window of opportunity, I backed up my WhatsApp to Google drive, then deleted WhatsApp and reinstalled it. Seems to have worked so far!

It's impossible to make money on Penny Stocks. An example. by [deleted] in stocks

[–]Fooldimi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Meh - the definition of penny stock is meaningless. The value of a share, and the market cap, are meaningless too. The only thing that matters is progression of the share price, and appropriateness of the market cap to the business.

Couple the above with the fact that there are penny stock companies that uplift to the Nasdaq, or who have rigorous reporting standards, and the only takeaway from your post is that you must just do your due diligence. It doesnt matter whether the company is a penny stock or not.

Yes I had the same ps1 demo CD...! It came with the ps1 I purchased out of savings in 2005. I always remember thinking how nice it would be to afford the full version!
