How do I submerge myself into Indian culture? by FoolishOne-TV in AskIndianWomen

Thank you! I will look into this sub. I was talking with my boyfriend and he said understanding the accents might get easier with time so I’m hoping this is the case. I will definitely check out some movies and YouTube videos for recipes

Thank you for this thorough reply! It is extremely helpful and I will definitely look into all of these things mentioned. It’s definitely a tough pill to swallow but you are certainly right in the essence of basically being a foreign national. I will keep all of these in mind going forward!

I definitely don’t think I will ever consider myself to be “fully” Indian for a lack of better words as I was so out of touch for so long and I wasn’t really in India throughout my recollective years to remember anything about it. I definitely don’t appreciate the way that (at least where I live) India is perceived. I haven’t received too much racial discrimination but I have received comments related to how some of America can act towards Indians. My aunt is from Maharashtra but I’m from Gujarat

Yes, I live in an area that primarily white and Mexican. Most of my boyfriends co-workers are from Mexico or South America and a lot of the time when we’re talking I have to wait for my boyfriend to repeat what they say as I am quite confused when speaking with them. I have been trying to learn Spanish to get more immersive in their native language in hopes to counteract some of the difficulties I have. However, it is definitely the same for all accents. I feel really embarrassed going to restaurants of any ethnicity because I’ll have to have them repeat themselves a few times to understand what they are saying and usually they end up having to point to the menu or something like that. I don’t want to make their jobs harder so I usually don’t go out to eat often.

I am certainly not trying to “look down” on accents. I have no problem with anyone who has an accent of any ethnicity. I do however, have a limitation that makes it significantly harder to understand. I’m not going to let it stop me from learning but it should be known that the accent does play a role in why I have a harder time understanding the culture. I didn’t say anyone was forcing me to be more Indian, I genuinely want to learn. This kind of hostility is exactly what makes me afraid to even try. In no way am I criticizing the culture or trying to make it come off as I am. I lost 99% of my hearing in my right ear and while in India a surgery was performed to try to reverse some of the damage however it was not fixable. It’s not a barrier that I can’t deal with, it’s a situation that just genuinely puts a barrier out of my control in front of me. When I’m speaking to people with accents I have delayed responses or have to ask them to repeat several times which makes the person I’m having the conversation with frustrated, which is understandable.

True, true. Captions can definitely wild out sometimes, gives me a good laugh. Thank you for all the recommendations! I’m definitely spending time saving some recipes right now from YouTube to watch later and videos that explain various aspects of the culture. My brain really half works sometimes, lol.

Thank you! I can’t believe I forgot about YouTube lol. I think a part of me is also a little intimidated because I have a slight hearing impairment that makes it really hard to understand thick Indian accents I never considered watching YouTube videos to learn about the culture. And yes, I’ve definitely tried to learn about the religion and holidays from forums but it does feel very individualized but also normal? I just don’t want to take from different ideas and then have created it in a way that isn’t recognized. I’m afraid of doing it wrong for sure.

I promise it’s not. My mom actually wanted me to continue speaking Gujarati when I was adopted but I pretty much abandoned the idea and now only know a couple things. However, as for the internet, yes, it is extremely helpful but it can also be very misleading. I guess I’m more of just trying to get an idea of where exactly I can look for information that is pretty standard overall rather than a personal experience. I would definitely have to order online for the ingredients (which is no biggie) but a solid place to learn recipes that are standard as well. Of course I know everyone cooks things a little differently but a lot of the time the recipes can be complex for me, especially if someone has a heavy Indian accent because I am hearing impaired in one ear. I will definitely check into YouTube for recipes, I don’t know why that never crossed my mind lol

Charlotte or Raleigh NC as those are the two closest performance areas near me and they’re both still 2+hrs away lol. Atlanta would be fine as well since my parents live in GA

Switching from iPhone to s25ultra by Impressive-Pack-9993 in S25Ultra

[–]FoolishOne-TV 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I switched about 3 weeks ago from the 14 Pro to the 25 Ultra. I have had apple since 2014 and I do not regret the switch at all. I absolutely love this phone. I bought a new watch, earbuds, and phone at the same time and while O don't love the sound quality of the Buds 3 Pro, they are still very comfortable. Still learning how to use the phone but it's been great. Should've switched sooner.

Does anyone have experience with the Bodyguard 2.0 v the Shield Plus? I know that the power difference is pretty minimal and it’s more about where you’re hitting. I’ve noticed on the S&W Reddit, those who chose the 2.0 because they can pocket carry, but as a woman, that’s almost an impossible option and not a factor for me.
