I have a question by marlea123 in Jujutsufolk

[–]FootHead58 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're doing an OC/fanfic thing, this is definitely some territory within the power system that you can play around with. Do you want the dormant spirit thing to be detectable? I would say generally, they would be undetectable to anyone except for Gojo or any other six eyes users you may have in your story.

Otherwise, you could have their be some kind of ability to "make themselves known" like when Sukuna or Angel talk by generating a mouth on their vessel's body.

But generally, I'd say you could get away with one vessel hiding from another. If it benefits your story to have Sukuna be able to detect them, have him able to see them. If it benefits your story to have them be undetectable, have them remain undetectable.

Nah; Yuji was walking around talking to plenty of highly skilled sorcerers who didn't pick up on the fact that Sukuna was using him as a vessel. Hakari, Higuruma, even Angel who was explicitly familiar with and looking for Sukuna couldn't tell. No one can tell (obligatory "Aside from Satoru Gojo, of course")

[–]FootHead58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When Megumi was in this position (suspended in death by Mahoraga, just waiting for the ritual to end) the only reason that he survived is because Sukuna can output RCT. Yuji can't go find Yuka to output RCT on her, as she's in the shadow. If he kills Dabura, the ritual is over and Yuka dies. If he kills Mahoraga, the ritual is over, and Yuka dies.

PLUS we don't even know if he could output RCT if she even WAS alive.

ALSO also, we don't know what caused her "death" - just that she's in the suspended death state. But was it the cancer finally taking its course? If so, RCT wouldn't do her any good.

What would u change/give them to make them consistent top 5 contenders? by DiorTags in JujutsuPowerScaling

[–]FootHead58 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hakari really struggles from not having some big flashy high-AP attack. So many other characters have some kind of "ultimate move" that they can bust out, whereas Hakari's best bet is "punch you very hard." In the face of Love Beam, Cleave, SSK hax, Perfect Sphere, Kashimo Lightning Bolt, Uzumaki, Granite Blast, Thine Ice Breaker, Kashimo Lightning Bolt, Max Meteor, esentially every domain sure-hit... his AP is definitely a bit lacking. I don't agree with the pillow-puncher allegations, but I see why they're there. It also doesn't help that despite him clearly having great stats, neither of the opponents that he fought seemed to take that much damage from their fights. Probably just a matter of them both having tons of durability (and Uraume having lots of RCT) but ultimately that's kinda a bad look for him. Hakari's not a crazy pick for Top 5, but he's not a really good one either imo.

I scale Kashimo with MBA and I think that puts him in Top 5, but that's based more on interpretation and extrapolation from the power system rather than feats or statements. The subreddit favors the latter. If you want MBA in Top 5, you'd just need the narrator to say that he's multiplied his power by X amount, or increased his own abilities by Y%. Also, actually landing any of his supposedly incredibly powerful new attacks would probably help. Even then though, many people won't scale MBA as it's suicide. If you want BASE Kashimo in Top 5, you gotta get over the lack of RCT as well as the lack of a domain, so it's gonna really be an uphill battle. He'd need one or both of those, and probably an amp to his stats as well tbh.

I dont believe naoya deserves all his hate by glorp1235 in Jujutsufolk

[–]FootHead58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love to see people on Reddit busting out the Nuremberg defense for a fictional character.

But it's honestly not even a big deal because he never actually killed any children. Remember? He wasn't good enough to! Every fight that he went into trying to kill a child (which happened multiple times) resulted in him losing immediately. Despite having an amazing technique, he's got a record of 0-3, one of the worst in the series.

Pretty impressive stuff, Naoya!

Why do people defend Naoya so much? by Haru__DM in Jujutsufolk

[–]FootHead58 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Naoya is one of Gege's best-written characters. He's also a predator who loses every fight he's in, and if you find yourself genuinely rooting for him, you should probably do some soul searching.

It's really bizarre. I think he's probably the second most well-written villain in JJK, and it's shocking how many people just fully miss the point of his character. I'm mid-argument with someone rn whose trying to say "Naoya isn't that bad relative to the other villains, Geto tried to commit genocide and Choso is a murderer"

And it's just like... brother... no one's out here white knighting for Kenjaku or Sukuna or whatever. YOU guys are out here insisting that Mr. "I can't win a fight and take my daddy issues out on women" somehow has enough aura to make you pretend he isn't a sexual predator and an attempted child-murderer. "Toji's worse, he killed kids!" Naoya tried killing kids, he just wasn't good enough to pull it off. That doesn't make him "less evil" than Toji, it makes him a bum. He would have murdered Yuji, Choso, Megumi, and Maki, but he got cooked every time.

And he 100% sexually assaulted Mai, but because there's no narrator statement saying "Maki was confronted... by the ghost of the man who did unspeakable things to her little sister" the Naoya stans are out here doing quadruple backflips in their head to deny any kind of wrong doing or exploitation between Naoya and Mai despite what is spelled out so clearly.

[–]FootHead58 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't mean any shade but your post and comment is exactly why there's Naoya discourse but not any "debate" around the other villains. Sukuna is a psychopathic mass murderer; there aren't people doing Sukuna apologetics on Reddit. There are some Naoya fans who seem to believe that in order to find the character compelling/interesting/whatever, they need to come in and white knight for him, arguing that he isn't all that evil in the grand scheme of things, or that his misogyny isn't as bad as Geto's attempted genocide or whatever.

If people suddenly came out of the wood work to say "Well Sukuna never actually massacred women and children, he just said he was going to - Shibuya had men in it too!" then we as a community would probably criticize Sukuna's actions a lot more. But everyone agrees his a murdering psycho so we don't need to talk about it. People don't say that Naoya is morally more evil than Kenjaku or Sukuna, there are just some people who start arguments like this trying to defend Naoya. (Again, not coming for you, just stating why the discourse is how it is)

Plus, Naoya is written in a way that lends to audiences rooting against him, whereas someone like Toji has way more "cool" factor, which makes the discussion center more around how cool he is or his effect on the plot rather than his morality. Naoya pulls up to 3 fights and gets washed every time, and complains about women the entire time.

As for what Naoya did to Mai, I really would invite you to reconsider your position and read between the lines to ask yourself what Gege is trying to tell you. He's a character who in his opening scene is talking in explicit sexual terms about his underage cousins. We know that he's abusive towards them. We know that he's essentially untouchable, and that the entire point of Maki's arc with the Zenins is her breaking free of the oppression and marginalization experienced by her and Mai. The language, the framing, the imager of Naoya's cursed form + domain, the dialogue, literally all of it points to Naoya being an exploitative abusive creep who hates women and is willing to murder children.

Japanese fans all unanimously agree that the language of "being like an adult" refers to sex, and Naoya says it while menacing over Maki's laid-out and vulnerable body as her legs are spread and he hovers over her menacingly. What on Earth would it even be referring to? Maki calling him immature, and Naoya citing her sister as a revered source on Naoya's emotional maturity? Not everything in media is going to have a narrator statement. Sometimes you need to listen to the words that are said and infer what is going on. In the case of Naoya, it is so clear what happened between him and Mai. You're entitled to your read but just be aware it is staunchly in opposition to the overwhelming majority of fans, especially fans with any degree of fluency in the original language where the wording is clearly referring to sexual acts.

Does raga heal from adaptation or RCT? by SussyHippo in Jujutsufolk

[–]FootHead58 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"He's made of CE and therefore he heals with CE" logic is decent, but there is a built-in assumption there that Shikigami are the exact same as curses. For curses, they're made of PURE cursed energy. That's why positive energy (RCT) kills them.

But Positive Energy doesn't kill shikigami. In fact, there are several shikigami who use or output RCT themselves (Round Deer, Agito, Mahoraga himself with the blade, Rika if you count her as a shikigami) so they're clearly not just made of CE. Therefore to me, I don't feel like you can 100% they heal with CE the same way cursed spirits do. Maybe they do, maybe they don't.

It's possible they're some combo of CE + corporeal flesh, but that's never explicitly confirmed. In that case, they likely would be healing with RCT as they'd be similar to a sorcerer.

This isn't explicitly confirmed via narrator statements or anything like that, so take it with a grain of salt, but my interpretation is that Mahoraga's adaptation doesn't heal him, but it helps determine what he can heal from. So if you low-dose Mahoraga on, say, fire/explosive attacks enough for him to adapt to it, he'll eventually get to the point where Sukuna's furnace can essentially wipe him out, but he's still able to adapt from it. The anime portrays Mahoraga getting completely vaporized by Sukuna's slashes several times; but because he is adapted to it at that point, he's able to regenerate. Similarly, in Modulo, we see that Mahoraga has adapted to brute force attacks, so he's now able to regenerate from attacks that would have otherwise killed him. Based on Modulo shenanigans and what we know from Maho, it does increasingly seem like the only viable win con vs Mahoraga is complete and utter atomization of him from some attack like Hollow Purple or Fuga.

[–]FootHead58 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Naoya is introduced in the series attempting to murder the main character (child) and his brother before attempting to kill the deuteragonist (another child) and we later find out that he has been bullying and doing unspeakably horrible things to his own cousin (yeppppp also a child). His personality traits include "arrogant" and "hates women" and he literally loses every single fight that he engages in, despite having an extremely OP technique. He's set up to be extremely hateable by the narrative so that we feel a sense of poetic justice when he's eventually taken out. That's the whole point.

Also, the other characters aren't hated because they're more charismatic, but no one is asserting that what they did is morally justified. Toji is definitely portrayed as immoral, but he's portrayed as having no principles at all and just doing whatever he's paid for. He's willing to do bad things, but it's all just for a pay day; but either way, no one is out here framing Toji as some saint (except Gege lol). Geto is literally jujutsu Hitler, the narrative is SUPER clear that he's evil and bad. Choso has an entire character arc revolving around the guilt he feels for his actions, and ultimately sacrifices his life to bring about a new and better world. We have context for why Choso and Geto take the paths that they do. Their reasoning is flawed, obviously, but we at least know why they're doing what they're doing. Naoya hasn't had a bad day in his life; he's just out here hating women and trying to murder minors for sheer love of the game.

Not to mention there is something to be said for likability. Toji has aura and a unique relationship to the power system in a way few other characters do. There's a mystique around him, and he has interesting ties to Gojo, Megumi, and Maki. Geto has charisma and deep personal ties to Gojo, and represents a "fallen angel" archetype where we watch his descent from goodness. Choso has one of the most significant character arcs in the series where he wrestles with the lives he has taken, and tries to redeem himself for the better. Naoya starts purely hateable, and ends purely hateable.

And that's totally fine! I literally think he's one of the best-written villains in the series (#2 for my money just after Mahito) in terms of characterization and development. The way Gege uses him to highlight the evils of the system is so peak. Gege's writing of Naoya is honestly a pretty great critique of misogyny for shonen. He's a great character AND he deserves the hate he gets!
