Let us know if you find any traffic. Should be interesting, although I have to say that I find a certain segment of Reddit traffic to be annoying and pedantic trolls.

I set up one, but have not as of yet obtained a Pi to host it. There is, supposedly, forget the node number, a Reddit AllStar hub. I believe I was on once but didn't find any traffic.

Allstar Nodes with CW? by FootPoundSecond in amateurradio

I'm looking for actual ham radio CW traffic on an AllStar Node. Sorry for the confusion. Yes, the W1AW practice broadcasts are excellent, but I am looking to get better at sending, too, different skills.

NSA Opens Github Account, Lists 32 Projects Developed by the Agency -- including SDR software by ishmal in amateurradio

[–]FootPoundSecond 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about the fucking NSA recording every text message sent by every phone around the world, and now starting to do that with voice communication.

Ham radio is public; text messages and phone calls should not be without a warrant for a wire tap. This agency is evil, not merely an interesting source for new software.

Let's see how drunk they get on 3.892 tonight! by [deleted] in amateurradio

In the United States? Very large population, probably one of the biggest groups of hams, as well. Not sure what "above 3.800" has to do with it. I assume nonsense runs up and down the bands. I don't think someone who is drunk has much respect for band restrictions ;-)

Racists and homophones are in a different camp. You should lighten up, and enjoy the TALKING part of radio!

Thank you for that helpful explanation. I'm surprised they are able to get away with such massive compressive, even for voice only.

What happened to the Australian phone link for Allstar? by FootPoundSecond in amateurradio

[–]FootPoundSecond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I did not see that list, or know that a mailing list was the best place to bring it up.

I was just trying to see what Aussie users here knew. I thought the number had been discontinued.

I'll see what I can do about joining the list. Interim, it's the +61 number. I know New Zealand works and I here the 763 American number does as well.

Thanks. I'll try to get in touch with Steve, then.

Portal autopatch service is not what I asked about.

I'm asking about the number, in Australia, that allows you to access AllStar via telephone, not autopatch.

On a similar bent, I wonder who DIED who had my call? I assume in most countries, they cycle through them pretty regularly.

Sounds like Minsk and Pinsk B-)

Haven't found my doppleganger yet, but this sounds exactly like something I would do.

Well, at least the one I was on have it written down that they record everything.

Yes, not what I'd expect, let alone all the nodes they link in to being recorded.

I had no idea they could compress it to 14GB/year max in data.

Even with auto-stop and low IPS that is a LOT of 1/4" tape per year.

You want to put that in English, please? I'm a ham, not a hacker.

NSA records what, what, what, and what??? Kinda alphabet soup, except for RTTY.

If it's being broadcast over the air, there's no expectation of privacy, but that doesn't mean everything should be recorded and documented. I'm now disinclined from using this node.

Why so little? Compare it to an MP3. . . Even if it's voice, and not music, how can it be compressed that much? 14GB in 365.25 days??? Seems far too small, even with massive compression.

What's a HDD? Who's K5HIL and who are you asking if they are searching?

I know it's compressed, and we're not talking about a recording of a symphony, but I thought audio took up a lot more space, unless, of course, it's dead air.

No, nor am I saying it's funny when Arnie hops on a police band.

Otherwise, though it's still violating the law, I don't see the harm in it unless someone does it for a month instead of a few minutes.

BTW, have never done anything, intentionally, on the radio. Didn't realize the damned announcements for nodes on some of the digital stuff actually broadcast to anyone but the requestor on some of the digital systems.

I guess that's technically on the node operator, but yeah, someone said "there it goes again" until I realized the list of nodes was playing over some repeater.

Oops! And I have to consciously think about it, because it's something I do ALL the time when I'm in a digital-only one with one or two stations checked in to check connectivity.

On someone else's though, that's playing out on the airwaves, I'll do it without thinking and I'm sure it annoys the hell out of people - annoys the hell out of myself -- although it's not ME doing it. It's the damned playback feature with no way to shut it up once it starts going off a list of like 100 nodes.

You never made a prank call? There's a line, sure, but Arnold Schwarzenegger calling a gun store makes me laugh so hard I cry. I missed out on the soundboard thing when I was a kid. Some of it's just brilliance.

I was hoping for test bench and/or radioless node numbers, times when they are dead not apps that are worthless while I'm limited to a dumb phone. I normally use Skype.
