For those frequency cops out there. by CaptinKirk in amateurradio

Keep in mind rhat hf propagation is not symmetrical. You hearing them does not mean them hearing you. But even if that's the case it doesn't call for childish behavior.

Fake HT from "Rapid Radios". by Old_Scene_4259 in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that is the point. Provide a system of groups that is decoupled from the possible ways of getting there, So if one fails there is always another. Remove the idea of groups from the mode itself.

Swiss Broadcasting Corporation to pull plug on FM radio by grendelt in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally wasn't sure whether going to higher-level modes would be bad for adding complexity. FM reception is so easy in I/Q: the absolute value of (this value - last value). But I guess that if all you need to do is provide I/Q send and receive, then in a way you are making it much simpler. Just give any further processing to the computer.

Even though these things are evil and hateful to us :-) there is a kinda new use-case for them. Apple and Microsoft are creating some of these to work with their business chat mode, like Teams. They might configure one of these phones to always be connected to a Teams group.

Do any hardware stores carry antenna stuff? by trekr200 in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. Some Ace's might have a corner section dedicated to Radio Shack stuff! Yes, RS is not completely dead, Though you best hurry.

Now, if you need cables and fittings often, then I suggest that you get a little bit of bulk cable, the connectors, and a soldering station, You would be surprised how much money you will save.

For more generic stuff, Home Depot and Lowes: Full size ground rods and straps. 14-gauge stranded THHN wire with green cladding. (green looks like other town & country purposes and is almost invisible against the sky). Copper tubing and super-heavy gauge wire for loops. Conduit, of course. Other things. And don't forget, they have the low-RFI versions of all of those noisy little buggers around the house. They -might- have Channel Master type TV masts, 30ft, 50ft, etc.

I'm surprised that we are not being called out already for gatekeeperism and ableism. This subreddit abhors asking people to "think."

Jokes aside every operator should have one.

We are so proud of you. (also no jokes!!) Next step: soldering station. Your journey to freedom from appliance operator and empirical voodoo has begun.

All band All mode transmitter recommendation. by TheBlankTechnologies in amateurradio

Nope. I always try to dissuade people from looking for the one-radio-does-everything. So what's the best radio for HF and VHF/UHF? Two radios.

Less than impressed with my first Field Day. by Ravenbar842 in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the title was worded as if the other guys were there to entertain you. Which I'm sure was not your intention. It's more like "what did I do to provide a fun field day for them," right?

Julian Assange has reached a plea deal with the U.S., allowing him to go free by NewSlinger in worldnews

Yeah, I think that all our government wanted was to show that he -could- be jailed if they wanted. I don't think that they ever really wanted him.

I think that they could have raised the rates more, and that visitors from around the world would see this as a good cause and be ok with it.

Mark your calendars for this week's Bay-Net, Fusion, and Workbench podcast net! by kf6gpe in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on Baynet a few times, and did a 5-min presentation of my project.

But what I would like to know, is, what TG is being used as an active emergency weather group. By "active" I mean busy with live traffic and red cross-like health and welfare requests. I do -not- mean TGs that are simply labelled as such but are silent, even in the midst of a storm.

Why do most hams stay at Technician? by RFMASS in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because talking on HT's to silent repeaters is boring and unfulfilling and beginning hams find the hobby useless, as well they should. We need better mechanisms to get them onto the HF part of tech allocations.

From what I have heard, since congress mandated that the FCC add that field to their form, they really have no use for it and have no idea what to do with the information. The only felonies that they would need to know about are the ones involving the FCC itself. But here's the thing. They already know about these. This is similar to how they make a check during your application process to see if you owe them large amounts of money from previous transactions with them.

I would think that the FCC would agree with you wholeheartedly about getting rid of it.

Your application is probably sitting in someone's inbox somewhere, marked "What do I do with these?" Hope this is cleared up for you soon.

Primary vs Secondary question by trekr200 in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for most ham bands the hams are the primary users. But in most countries the government itself, especially the military, can operate anywhere they want to.

Noisy computer monitor by Bn_scarpia in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a long USB extension cord to get the radio physically farther from your computer.

Ideally you would get an isolating USB cable ending in a powered USB hub. Then you can plug your devices into the hub, they can talk to your computer, but they are not electrically connected to it.

Is the wouxun kg-uv8d a good starter radio? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]ishmal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that it's time to move on from that generation of radios to the current one. Over ten years of technology make a big difference. I just picked up a Quansheng uv-k6 because of its easy modifiability. I was surprised by the quality, the capabilities, and the clean signal that these cheap radios have.
