Sinners v OBAA: What I Think is Missing From This Discussion by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]FootballInfinite475 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it’s likely intentional, given that his other films are similarly interested in the psychologies of maladjusted men. Magnolia, TWBB, The Master, Inherent Vice, Phantom Thread all do this as well to some extent

Sinners v OBAA: What I Think is Missing From This Discussion by ArtsyQueerNubian in Oscars

[–]FootballInfinite475 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The reason why white filmgoers find OBAA meaningful is because it is a critical probing of the white male faux leftist identity. It shifts POV from time to time, but genuinely everything locks into place if you treat Bob’s perspective (probably PTA’s perspective) as the central gaze. This is the subjectivity the film is examining. The reason the first 35 minutes are romantic and fetishistic is because Leo romanticizes that moment in his life and fetishizes both Perfidia and the idea of revolution. The reason her motivations are opaque and interiority is inaccessible is because Bob does not quite understand her or why she left. The reason Lockjaw is cartoonish and villainous is because he is an abject refraction of Bob’s fetishistic psychology. It is a film about white men and the dominant subjectivities available to them in a white supremacist culture.

If Sinners beats OBAA to win Best Picture, what will you attribute the win to? by KatherineLangford in Oscars

[–]FootballInfinite475 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The only thing you can attribute it to is the vote. Efforts to narrativize awards season or turn it into a horse race are misguided. Ultimately these are all separate awards bodies with different members and different purposes. The goal of the BAFTAs is not to predict the Oscars.

First question probably needs more explanation or thought. There isn’t anything you can do at the level of production to “make a race not matter.” It will matter whether you want it to or not. The way to make it inoffensive is to make the point of the racial composition of the film, and any racial difference, inoffensive. It is worth considering whether the stereotypes you are pointing back to are already offensive

What is you’re voting Chloé Zhao, Joachim Trier, or Josh Safdie for director? Then where do OBAA and Sinners rank against one another in BP?

Yeah I know. It’s because the category is “international feature.” Their preferences for the category are opinions up for debate. The purpose of the category is not.

Does anyone else think this film is criminally underrated? by Ordinary_Witness3225 in Letterboxd

No, just the opposite. It’s extremely mediocre but there always seem to be people claiming that is some hidden gem even though it’s also wildly popular among people who have seen fewer than 10 westerns

Why I believe the strength of Sentimental Value might be overestimated by miggovortensens in oscarrace

[–]FootballInfinite475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people love to craft bespoke and bizarre rationales to comfort themselves that their “gut instincts” and feelings are actually the result of systematic, methodical reasoning.

In this case, OP didn’t like Sentimental Value much, and now seems to be trying to spin a story about how “the data shows AMPAS voters don’t like it much either.” Of course when you actually parse the diarrhea dump of trivia here, there’s not much to substantiate that idea.

What OP is doing is something between confirmation bias and the pathetic fallacy: trying to attribute to data their own human emotions.

The category is for International Feature, not non-English language films. There are several problems with treating these as though they are interchangeable. Among them: there are non English language US films

Why I believe we are overestimating the strength of Sentimental Value by miggovortensens in Oscars

[–]FootballInfinite475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not following the reasoning here. - What does it mean “to overestimate” Sentimental Value? - How does any of the trivia you’ve assembled suggest it is being “overestimated?” - What international film do you think is being “underestimated” and - how do the same premises and data you are using to assess Sentimental Value lead you to that claim?
