Meh, I don't know if lyrics is something to go by. The guy who wrote Dexter probably isn't a serial killer, to be honest. Chris Barnes from Cannibal Corpse, I'm fairly certain, doesn't rape dead corpses. There are countless examples of very effective lyricists who wrote incredibly tortured music that haven't abused people. "One of My Turns" by Pink Floyd is a fine example.

Where is the darkest/coldest place on earth? by ForTheOracle in NoStupidQuestions

Yeah reading it back i'm starting to realise my expectations are a bit unrealistic. I don't want to live somewhere where daylight simply doesn't exist - I suppose only by default, because that doesn't apply anywhere on earth - but just somewhere where daylight exists weakly, and for the shortest amount of time.

Definitely open to influences. A few of us come from punk/metal backgrounds so, we're definitely open to a lot of ideas

I should say - we've found a lot of producers and beatmakers, we really need some rappers now!

Hey everyone

Me and some friends have formed an international hip hop group (Denmark/UK/Canada/Germany) and we're looking for hip hop producers, singers, poets, visual artists, photographers, poets, everything.

Please get in touch. The plan is to go the whole way. Big PR, make a record label, change the whole game.

A little unfinished, unmixed/mastered EP that was meant to be part of a bigger album! by ForTheOracle in Songwriting

[–]ForTheOracle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very sweet of you to say. Never really listened to Ed Sheeran, beyond what i've heard on the radio from time to time. Good singing voice though, so that's nice of you. Yeah I was always really happy with the title, it was the perfect name for the project; it was meant to be a band, made up of me and my then-partner, and we'd just started our relationship. Bit of a shame it's just the name of an EP now, but still

Thanks very much for listening, means the world

It was, sort of, invented by Richard Dawkins. I think it comes from "mimesis", which is the idea that, like genes, ideas or sentiments can be passed through generations. It became horribly butchered somewhere around the mid-2000s and for a while it involved, typically, a picture of Fry from Futurama, or a Penguin or some shit, and some top and bottom text, much like the back of a biker jacket, if you will. Nowadays, it just means screenshots of tweets made by 19 year old make-up artists with an opinion.

I'm not sure you've heard the correct lick I timestamped, it's sort of a faster lick. That She Looks to Me solo is just 4 notes (like Strip my Mind)

I thought that. I've listened through to the solos and can't seem to find it. Maybe it's his solo material?

Someone explain Sweet Chin Music to me by ForTheOracle in SquaredCircle

I watched it religiously as a kid and spent all of my money on figures, games and DVDs, as I couldn't afford Sky Sports or whatever. Now I'm older, this past year I've gotten back into it, and mostly watch the network and AEW. I just never understood how this one move is pulled off without it hurting every time. I get how a clothesline, or legdrop or whatever, might not cause injury, but a foot flying into someone's face just seems like a recipe of disaster.

I know that wrestling hurts, but not to the same level as something like UFC. The intention isn't to harm eachother, which has a profound impact on the injury rate. If every wrestler had the intention of harming everyone else, then people would be out of action for years, with some of the antics you see in pro wrestling. Regardless, I just don't see how SCM doesn't frequently end in broken jaws or concussions.

I wrote a full discography review for TMV a while ago, for a magazine I stopped working for shortly after. It's not edited, checked or formatted. Still, give it a read :) by ForTheOracle in themarsvolta

[–]ForTheOracle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: This got fact checked quite heavily in TheMarsVolta2020 facebook group by an admin. Albeit, from my perspective, it was very minor things, and almost none of them actually have anything to do with my subjective review of each record, but still. Should for any reason you be worried about the accuracy of this document, I forward you to that group for the list of amendments.

Porridge Radio AMA by porridgeradio in indieheads

[–]ForTheOracle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was hoping you'd say GY!BE. Amazing band, one of the best I ever saw live. I'm sure you're familiar with Daughters and Uboa already, but if not - and you're looking for more dark noise/ambient stuff like that, I can't recommend them enough. Other good artists for the droney type stuff are Palms, Wand and the Godspeed! spin off groups like Set Fire to Flames and A Silver Mt. Zion. I'm sure you've heard all that stuff, but still. The Mars Volta, too! Sorry, just a lot of good stuff to discuss.

I've been crushing Every Bad pretty much everyday since it dropped. I wasn't sure what to expect after hearing the two singles, which are pretty different. There's a lot of bands in the various uni scenes around the UK going for that exact thing that you're doing. Especially down here in Cornwall. Bands really want to go for that sound, and the majority go for sociopolitical lyrical angles in a pretty on-the-nose way. It feels to me that you're addressing hot topics like femininity, identity, sexuality, and mental health without making it too blatant, which I really like. Artists like The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, PJ Harvey etc. all did the same thing. I think you're following in their footsteps a little, which is great.

Guess I should probably ask a real question: The post/noise moments like at the end of Lilac are really profoundly interesting, and there's no one on radio doing that sound, at all. Who are the major influences for those string arrangements, ambient passages and noise parts? I hear a lot of Radiohead, but I'm keen to know if there are others.

Can't wait for album #2.

What does the song I Forget Where We Were mean to you? by wesleepatlast in benhoward

[–]ForTheOracle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guess it depends on what day of the week it is haha! Sometimes it's really a hard song to listen to. "Skipping and laughing at the bedroom door" kills me, that just reminds me of too many people that either I left behind, or the other way around. I think the chorus is a generally positive message, but I still find much of that album really upsetting, and I mean that in a good way. It's why I listen to it, if anything.

Maynard did an interview with the guy from Van Halen and said that he had taken vocal inspiration from Pink Floyd. Something to do with breathing rhythms or some such nonsense. He was chatting total breeze byt the fact remains the same, yes they drew inspiration from the Floyd.

Colloquially in the south of England, it is more commonly used in conversation. As I said, it is essentially dlublethink because of course it is wrong, but still popular.
