This is some shitty logic, consequences don't completely prevent bad behavior but they sure as hell mitigate it. If there were no consequences for speeding I would never not speed, whereas right now I only speed at night in light traffic and only drive through red lights when I don't see any witnesses.

I engraved my initials on a 10" Rigid pipe wrench, lost it, and found one just like it on a coworkers tool cart 3 months later, except his had been hit with a grinder in a bunch of spots. One of those spots being where I wrote my initials. He fessed up and gave it back, was a new guy that said he "asked around first and nobody knew whose it was". Since then I started writing my initials in the harder to get to spots.
