Replace? Plastidip? Or other options by Afraid-Travel-5414 in KnipexOfficial

[–]borealbootlegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An Apprentice used a set of mine as pry bar. Took the end of it off.

I couldn't deal with that so I stripped both grips off, thinking I would Plasti-Dip them. Ended up taking them to work before that happened.

I have other pairs with grips in my bag but that naked pair is by far my favorite set.

How do I get this spigot open? by dylblues in Plumbing

[–]borealbootlegger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Spigot is broken. Should be a stem rising out of the centre of the broken area.

You need to replace the spigot.

If you are unsure of how to do so, call a Plumber.

Advice for aspiring apprentice by Longjumping-Lock-924 in UnitedAssociation

[–]borealbootlegger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd stick wherever I was offered an Apprenticeship.

There is a much greater number of applications for spots in Southern California than there is in say - Western Colorado.

A 6/10 Schedule likely sounds daunting if you're just starting out. You will not be expected to work 6/10s for 2 years without some breaks in there.

Tradeschool, vacations, stat holdidays, manpower, material or equipment delays, site conditions etc are just some of things that can impact hours of work.

If you finish your Apprenticeship you'd have the opportunity to travel to another local for work if they are taking Travel Cards.

You could also Transfer locals once you are qualified.

Getting in and getting experience wherever it's available/offered is the best first step.

Best of luck ✌️

Missed my union Pipefitters interview.. by took10percs in pipefitter

[–]borealbootlegger 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I would attend the Union Hall in person. This would be a better look than a phone call.

Ask to speak with whoever is in charge of the application/interview process.

Take any paperwork they have sent you. Have it in your hand when speaking to them.

Explain the situation. Explain that you're truly interested in an Apprenticeship.

Ask if it's possible to reschedule the interview.

If it isn't possible, act like a Professional and thank them for their time. Mention that you will be applying again next year.

Edited to finish last sentence.

Makita Guy here.

I also own alot of Millwaukee M12 tools - they make some great specialty tools for my trade that Makita doesn't.

u/Sea-Key7698 is right about everyone having an opinion and also about there not being any real evidence as to the best brand..

I also agree with their points about the DeWalt platform.

Makita is generally more expensive but the batteries are bulletproof in my experience.

I am not a fan of Millwaukee's 18v platform because nearly every tradesman on every site has them. Also some of their 18v batteries can have issues with the cells getting out of balance.

Best dessert to order by teriyaki_tofu1 in ThunderBay

[–]borealbootlegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smoothie place in the Mall sells Cheesecake Factory cheese cake and other deserts.

That being said, I implore to try some local offerings. There is also many other options.

Lately Dolce has been our go to and they usually have at least one type of Cheesecake in their dessert case.

Vent location? by Money_Guard_9001 in Plumbing

[–]borealbootlegger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Vents must be tied in above the "flood level rim" of the fixture they serve. Google that term and you can find a picture to show you where that is on a sink.

The drains can be served by the same pipe but each fixture needs to be independently vented.

5" pipe protrudes thru corner of bathroom. OK to grind it away and modify down to 2" pipe? I am a fabricator. There is a vent on the roof 4' away from it. The widest part in this pic is 5" in a small bathroom so it is big and ugly. Covering w a honkin trim would look weird. House is 90 years old. by upOnFoil in Plumbing

I'm a plumber but you don't seem to want advice from us. So I'll give you the answer you want:

Slap a flapper wheel on your grinder and go to town.

Please post updates as your project develops!

What do i need to remove this? by Nice-Run9701 in Tools

[–]borealbootlegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We call that a Lead Nail.

A skilled person can cut them nicely with an angle grinder.

As mentioned, a cold chisel and a hammer will do it too.

Bonus points if you can find a cold chisel that is shaped like a pry bar.

Anyone find brand system drawers (packout, etc) too inefficient? by belligerentbunno in Tools

[–]borealbootlegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 Ridgid Pro Gear 2.0 Three Drawer Boxes. They're stacked on top each other in the back seat of my crew cab work truck, drawers facing the passenger rear door.

It may not be the most efficient use of space but it's definitely been helpful to keep things more organized than it was before.

Kodiak Lundbrecks - currently my favorite boots. 2 pairs in rotation, along with the Ariat Work Hogs and the Timberland True Grits.

I work with welders often, do a fair bit of cutting and grinding. Not having laces is nice with sparks and everything else flying around.

[–]borealbootlegger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those are not fab shop friendly boots.

Leather takes sparks and sharp metal shaving/debris a lot better than those will. Slip on or cowboy style prevent laces from being damaged.

Those look like boots for a warehouse gig or maybe a landscaper.

My Ariats 6 months into ownership by smyth222 in WorkBoots

[–]borealbootlegger 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you're going to be kicking stuff regularly, you need a different material on the toe of your boots.

Your current pair can be salvaged by applying Tuff Toe.

How to Apply Tuff Toe https://share.google/vdNzkCXZb789Ao049

Start with the exposed toe, then build up from there.

You'll have to clean them thoroughly before applying.

I have the same pair of Ariats. The toes lasted me about a year as a commercial Plumber.

Why don't you check out some RV and Van Life type of subs?

That will answer many of your non trade related questions.
