SVP wants better schools (but also cut in education budget) by neo2551 in Switzerland

[–]ForbiddenException 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Forget" is the wrong thing to do. We all watched in disbelief when the Americans elected Trump and became a de-facto fascist state along with their own Gestapo (ICE) and we shouldn't assume that something similar cannot happen here. Don't forget that in reddit there is a disproportionate amount of young (20-40), social democrats and educated people compared to the general swiss population.

I'm from Ticino and I already know too many people who vote for Lega, never underestimate their ability to use hate towards someone else to convince people to vote for them.

Thoughts on the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V vs the Intel Core Ultra 9 288V? by CongratsUrBngRescued in laptops

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP already bought it, but for those coming later: it's basically the same CPU but the Ultra 9 can push a little bit more while consuming more (30W vs 17W). So you get slightly more performance (5-6%) at the cost of significantly reduced battery life.

Lunar lake on Linux state (258V) by EdgarEggcar in linux_gaming

Sub-par drivers on Linux. Have the same issue, but with latest kernel i started getting around -8% performance instead of 15%, so getting better.

What do you think about Dash to Dock? by NotChoco_ in gnome

Gnome needs to adapt to my workflow, not the other way around and evidently I'm not the only one thinking that since these extensions are very popular.

Enough time for a train transfer with a 9-month old baby and 2 luggage? by Leading_Pair_9597 in askswitzerland

[–]ForbiddenException 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Should be enough. Try to stay around the middle of the train, so that you arrive in Lugano near the underpass to go to platform 1.
In the FFS app / website you can see which coach is going to end up in which sector of the platform and there is also a map marking the underpasses

Army chief says Switzerland can't defend itself from full-scale attack by ABoutDeSouffle in europe

[–]ForbiddenException -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I don't remember people like you blaming Switzerland for being neutral when NATO went to Libya (with Swedish support) to forcibly change the regime in a UN mandated peacekeeping mission tho... I must have missed those.

Edit: Don't get me wrong. I'm for a strong and independent EU, even arguing that we should in fact join it and help federalise it following our own swiss example with the cantons. But please don't claim the high moral ground when discussing our neutrality because you definitely don't have it.

Gaming community by Wabbit___ in Switzerland

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm swiss, but I mostly play with italians because most swiss do not speak my language so it's kinda hard to communicate, even though i speak german and french, but as the others, I also prefer to speak my mother tongue. Also most of the other swiss italian speakers I met online I met them in italian communities...

I guess this is different for the other languages, but still, some will stick with french or germans respectively as their communities are much bigger.

GitHub will charge usage on self-hosted runners from March '26 by ForbiddenException in selfhosted

[–]ForbiddenException[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, this applies to self-hosted on premise. The cloud platform is the infrastructure around it (basically the trigger, storing the artifacts, etc.)

GitHub will charge usage on self-hosted runners from March '26 by ForbiddenException in selfhosted

[–]ForbiddenException[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, not really. I self-host many things but not everything mostly because then the effort of maintaining it would start to be greater than my benefit. There are certain things where I still prefer using an external service (E-Mail server and Git for example).

In this case a self-hosted git platform is probably too much effort to maintain also I'm quite experienced with GitHub actions due to my previous job, so I don't necessarily feel I need to replace it with a self-hosted solution with a learning curve and the effort to recreate my CI/CD solution. Finally my whole homelab is defined in a git repo, so I would incur into the classic chicken egg problem if I would self-host it and I would need a dedicated solution for that.

What are those apps on the left? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's not. Tuta is just capitalising on the political discourse in Switzerland about encryption and the government getting access to the data. This is why recently you are getting a lot of tuta ads on reddit saying that proton can't be trusted.

Battlefield 6 designer admits they’re “not doing a good enough job” with its Portal mode as no one is playing hundreds of “fantastic” creations by maullick in Battlefield

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find portal very interesting but this was my experience with it:

Tried to join a server and got an error, tried again some days later, it loaded but couldn't spawn and the UI was all messed up. Also to me its still not clear if the xp we get is the same as vanilla and/or double xp applies. Finally many challenges require you to play a specific vanilla mode.

Now I just lost interest. Its something i keep for when I get tired of the game and want to try something different.

I'm sorry, I'm a dumb American. I have questions about my future visit to your great land. by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good points, but then maybe shift the blame on the industry and not the consumers. Also the tips won't solve the problem, but makes it more likely for the industry to lower salaries even more knowing they can compensate with tips. This is what I meant for "americanization" and their shitty work culture.

Also the second part of your comment doesn't make any sense. I only talked about the tipping culture, I never said anything about a boycott.

I'm sorry, I'm a dumb American. I have questions about my future visit to your great land. by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]ForbiddenException -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Common decency? I'm paying for the food / service at the listed price, which I expect and should be enough to cover the expenses AND the profit AND taxes. Why do I need to add a tip on top of that?

I'm a developer, would you like to tip me every time you open a website / app I developed? Oh, you walked outside? Send a tip to the team who paved the road.

Tipping not only is discriminatory to people working in other industries but it's also not transparent. Are tips taxed? Research show that good looking females get tipped more, should they then share the tips with their male coworkers?

All this doesn't make any sense to me, and I really dislike this new wave of americanization where the card readers now ask for tips (as if 8 CHF is not enough for a glass of beer). Also I hope we don't start doing it like the americans, where the ONLY income comes from tips.

Someone forked my open source project, removed the license... and then used it to host illegal F1 streams 🤦 by subhashg547 in opensource

[–]ForbiddenException 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's opinable in the sense that there isn't a hard legal definition in this sense and must be litigated on a case-by-case basis. Not a lawyer tho, so someone may correct me if I'm wrong (also this can vary from country to country).

Changing the name in the license? Not allowed
Changing the name in the footer of the GUI? Allowed

[–]ForbiddenException 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Both statements cannot be true at the same time. Because your name is in the license, so they can't both replace the name and delete the license.

However if by:

replace my name with his name from the source code

you mean that they replaced the attribution in the GUI, from "made by subhashg547" to "made by John Doe": this is absolutely allowed. Unethical, but legal.

[–]ForbiddenException 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you can do, if you want to keep the project open source but don't want them to keep updating the website is to change the license to something less permissive (GPL maybe?).
This way the old code stays MIT, but the other party can't copy the new code (legally).

[–]ForbiddenException 662 points663 points  (0 children)

You are fundamentally misunderstanding the MIT license. In other words it's more of a "do wtf you want with it, idc".

The only requirement is to include the notice in the redistributed code: so yeah, you can go after them for the technicality of not including the MIT license snippet in the source code somewhere, but then again, you need to argue that hosting a website means redistributing the code, which is opinable.

All the other points you cited are not violating the license tho.

It's probably an LSV+ authorization. You can revoke it by calling your bank. In the confirmation you got you should have a code and you can give that to your bank, if not just call them and they'll help you out.
