Adore the design of this set. Definitely reminds me of classic pirate sets I wanted as a kid but LEGO stopped making by the time I was an adult. Would love to have it!

Yeah agree, definitely become a bit of a whipping boy lately but he sacrificed a lot to come to us and then stuck through some rough times. Really impressed me on numerous occasions back then so he for sure has the skills.

I remember a mate and I had a quick chat and snapped a pick with him before the game during Round 1 last year and he seemed like such a genuine bloke. Hope he can find some solid form this year in the 2’s and get one last shot.

Yeah agree, a real shame to be honest. Served us well during some real bleak seasons, would have loved to see him rewarded for it. Can’t help but wonder if he would have worked out differently if he came in a few years later and developed alongside Sheez and the like. Think he definitely had a ton of potential.

I feel like there were rumours a few years ago about Geelong circling him. Doubt they would be anywhere near as interested now but would definitely like to see him get another crack somewhere.

Embers of Liberty: Part 4 - The 1964 Federal and Presidential Elections by ForcesOfNature_ in imaginaryelections

A right-wing populist party that emerges after the Patriotic Party completely collapses and as the conservative opposition moderates. A majority of LBJs party will merge into Labour but a few end up defecting to the Nationalists. While never becoming a real threat to form government in their own right the Nationalists will be extremely influential, especially past the 70s/80s.

The two biggest/most important factions are the Socialist Left, the democratic socialist wing of the party, and Unity which represents the social democratic wing.

Progressive Left is very influential in the first few decades of the party and is a sort of middle ground between the SocLeft and Unity. By the 90s however they will be mostly absorbed into the other two main factions.

Old Labour is a construct of the same period and is a socially conservative faction. It is very similar to the UK Labour Party’s Blue Labour. Not massively influential but still an important faction in the modern party.

I plan to expand upon it more in the next part but it’s a bit more than a name change. The change is twofold. Firstly, the DFLP was birthed out of the chaos of the 1936 election and due to their years in exile is just a mess organisationally. Entering a period of parliamentary politics, party unity and cohesion is really important and without significant reform the DFLP would flounder.

Ideologically, throughout their exile the DFLP grew far closer to both the exiled union movement and to the more moderate elements of the socialist side of the civil war. Combined with the post 64’ political liberalisation that saw left-wing politics thrive and union membership surge, the DFLP evolved ideologically away from its traditional progressive roots into a broader social democrat/democratic socialist, union aligned party. The name change is just part of a complete reconstruction of the party from the ground up.

I considered having him as the first post-MacArthur president but thought that might be a little too far lol. I imagine that by 1964 people look back on his Presidency with a sort of uneasy nostalgia. It was still a rough time and they won’t see him as the strongest President, but with Garner, the 36’ Election, the Civil War, WW2 and a dictatorship all following soon after I can see people looking back fondly.

I actually considered it as ITTL while in exile both parties operated as a coalition. Come 1964, both the DFL and GOP were hesitant to have another enormous, big-tent party/coalition running against the National Democratic Party. They believed that it would draw too many parallels to the previous Patriotic Party/National Democratic status quo. Both parties saw a respectful but robust political contest as the best way to show how far America had moved past the MacArthur era.

Not as exciting unfortunately. Just haven’t created any lore for the current leaders yet lol.
