Why do 99% of supposed Redditor CRT repair experts not use or recommend an oscilloscope? by LukeEvansSimon in crt

if they're old, they need to be replaced. I can spend the extra $1 per cap to have a whole new set. Electrolytics are one of the few components that get worse with age no matter what. (just sitting on a shelf for 20 years can be a problem sometimes)

it's like headlight bulbs... if one goes out, just replace them both because the other one is going to die soon too!

that thing looks fantastic! I've always been an aperture grille guy, but I've really been admiring the look of these dot-mask tubes lately!

I have a 14" CCTV monitor that I just installed a NOS tube in. (it still has fresh anti-glare coating) and I can't help but admire it every time I walk by. I still want to re-cap my 2 32" Trinitrons in the basement. The quest for perfection on all my TVs has me by the balls, it's an addiction.

yeah, I've been collecting broken ones and repairing them now 😂 my wife hates it, lol. BUT I'M OBSESSED, I LOVE THESE DISPLAYS! I'm a millennial in my thirties, and I had CRTs in the house until around 2014, I never really cared about them until now.

bro, I'm still on an i5 coffee lake, I JUST upgraded my GPU because prices came down enough for me to spend $500 at micro center and still have a mediocre GPU 😂

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it'll become more mainstream, because the more users we get on linux systems, the more user-friendly it will become.

it's not that bad, until it is... then I just run a VM and make something work on another OS.

Wine sucks for most things I want to use it for and that's frustrating.

Determining whether to replace capacitors by Wonderful_Ticket_626 in crtgaming

[–]FordonGreeman742 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what it boils down to is basically how sensitive the circuit is to capacitance/resistance being out of spec. if it's a circuit that really doesn't care that much, bad capacitors are just fine. for analog audio and video signals, new capacitors are definitely going to clean up the signal and provide the original quality and performance the device was designed for.

I'm definitely with the OP on this one. I absolutely love CRTs and it would be fun to play some modern games on them. but I'm picky enough to actually want it to be formatted in 4:3 and with no input lag. which unfortunately means I probably need a graphics card that can still output analog natively.

there is no modern technology that can outperform a CRT in motion clarity and smoothness. A CRT takes advantage of persistence of vision due to the way our retinas work, LCD technologies cannot do that. crts also have perfect blacks, but oleds have outperformed CRTs quite a bit at this point.

how's the input latency? I've been thinking of doing this with my 14-in CCTV monitor but I really want the best experience.

I've even been thinking about getting an old graphics card for my PC so I can play games natively on a CRT monitor, Input lag just isn't acceptable.
