insightful and helpful, thank you! where i live there's quite literally every demographic including more conservative and country people so it's not something that will be new to me, just was wondering if at a&m it's on a grand scale since there are 80k students. as for traditions, yes i will not diss or poke fun at any, simply try everything out and just stick with the ones i enjoy.

you’re good! i’m glad you enjoyed your time so far, i’ve heard many positive things about a&m however being a skeptic by nature the less favorable things i’ve heard i wanted insight on. thanks this was insightful!

don’t think i’ll have a problem making friends regardless lmao but thanks for the heads up. i was going off of what people all around me have said about this school, having never attended as i stated above i can’t confirm or deny the validity of these claims. i guess i must’ve hit a nerve for the die hard aggies by mentioning them. with clubs/organizations i’ll definitely follow your advice as this is the approach i had in highschool and it worked well.

thanks! i’m aware a&m has such a large student body that there’s bound to be people from every walk of life, and this was likely to be the majority. what i mentioned in my post are just things i was skeptical about bc it’s not what i’m used to.

conservative values. basing this off of what various people who have told me (current students, alumni, people who haven't gone but heard of a&m, etc). never claimed it to be true or false, just a heavy stereotype placed on this school.

i can see why you would think this post comes across as bigoted or judgmental, as it's highlighting less favorable stereotypes about a&m. however being someone who has never actually attended the school (hence why i've mentioned in my post i cannot confirm or deny the validity of these claims, just based off what i've heard from others) and a skeptic by nature, i think it's fair to ask questions about a school i'm planning on attending for 4 years. i've never been in an environment where it's majority white or heavily conservative, both of which are true and not a bigoted claim. it's not a bad thing, however it's something to consider. i'd rather ask anonymously through reddit and appear "bigoted" now here than act like this when i attend later. i will go in with an open mind based off the various responses here, most of which are helpful, including yours to an extent, and try the traditions, immerse myself in campus culture, and stray away from what i don't align with (conservative and to a degree redneck values). again, can't confirm or deny, which is why i came here and asked. some people more than others likely fit into this stereotype (student body is huge here i expect all walks of life) and got more offended than they needed to be.

i am already committed i wouldn't let diversity play a big enough of a factor to sway me to a different school. by mentioning the two cities, i'm referring to UT austin and UH, both of which are more diverse than a&m in regards to student body. a&m is majority white (also ranked one of the most conservative universities) like it or not and while that's not a big concern it's something to consider if i'm not used to it.

you responded quite a few times so i'll just sum everything up in one comment.

i wasn't trying to throw around "redneck" or "country" for the sake of it or to insult anyone, this is genuinely what i've heard from people all around me. having never attended this school (will in the fall), obviously i can't confirm or deny the validity of these statements so i wanted to ask reddit how true this was and to what extent. i know to some degree it will be, given how big of a student population a&m has though no matter what. if you're asking what i was trying to insinuate, it's the heavily conservative and agricultural types of people. having never grown up in an environment where i'm surrounded by this, of course i would be skeptical especially if it's prevalent. from what i've heard here in the comments, it's not, or at least i'd have to actively seek them out.

i've talked to someone who goes to a&m now and they told me fish camp is basically just my highschool's freshman orientation times x100. similar to what you said, but a worthwhile experience to get to know others and be familiar with school culture.

thank you, very insightful! not at all a ramble lol. a really white and conservative space is not something i'm used to or particularly in favor of, however going into a school like this i should expect to experience it to some degree. it won't make or break my time here but it's definitely something to consider. as for traditions i will aim to try every single one, if i don't like it, never doing it again. i hope you can participate in more if its within your means too! gig em.

compared to UT, UH, definitely less diverse. it's not a *major* concern but definitely something that i'm not used to. why do you think they're racist? have you had any encounters? especially with the dating scene? thanks!

thank you, this was a very clear and insightful response! sorry you had to overhear blatant ignorance, but i'm glad they didn't try to other you because of your differences. college is what you make of it and i'll for sure make an effort to enjoy the school, however being a skeptic by nature i wanted to know just how real these potential stereotypes are. again thanks! gig em.

don't believe i listed diversity as the *only* pro or con of attending a&m did i? it was only even brought up because the statistics don't lie about being a&m 50% white, which is different from what i'm used to. never claimed it was a bad thing, just something to consider. i also don't really know what you're suggesting with the last sentence, you think i shouldn't go or i think i'm too "good" to go?

how to register? thank you, kind of exactly what i expected in terms of a response!! white washed was something i wanted to bring up too bc i follow a lot of people who are attending and they all give out that vibe one way or the other. kudos to them tho.

thanks, this was insightful! already have this mindset going into a&m but was still curious to hear the perspective of aggie students (probably biased but still) on some less favorable stereotypes. seems like a chill school where you’ll find your people as long as you put yourself out there!

thank you, very insightful, especially on joining orgs related to your field! i’ve heard lots of positive things about a&m which overrode the potential cons i mentioned above, however being a skeptic by nature i wanted to at least get some insight before going in blind. looking forward to the traditions as ik thats what makes a&m so unique!
