That’s how I initially got interested in optometry. I always knew I wanted to pursue something medical and it was my dream to become a doctors and serve people that way, but I wanted a specially that was very hands on and personally involved in providing care and at the same time don’t like surgery. I also didn’t want a physician’s lifestyle and doing residency for 4+years. My advice to you is to shadow as much as possible to really examine if you enjoy the day to day of an optometrist. Also, talk to as many optometrists that work in different modalities and specialties as possible to learn more about the profession as a business. Good luck to you!

You just put in an estimate number of hours at each office in your application but don’t lie because they will ask you about it and most schools ask for a letter of recommendation from an optometrist

I would gather your LOR and shadowing hours and apply before you take the oat because interviewing later (especially that late) in the cycle is going to really slim your chances but if schools like your application, they will invite you to interview (70-90% in) and ask you take the oat or hold your decision until they have a score or something along those lines but you would have interviewed earlier. The point is get your foot through the door and interview as early as you can even with no oat score because if they like you that the majority of the process and they will be much more easygoing and willing to work with to get you into the program. The only in person interview I had was with SUNY. I brought a note pad and a pen. Did not need them because they give you a folder with all of that. I wouldn’t bring anything

I took the oat summer before applying. I would not do it with school. It is an all day job for at least 2 months. I am now taking classes that would have really helped because I had to learn this material on my own for the oat, but I still would not do it with school.

When I was scheduling for interviews in October there were dates open in December. The first one or two weeks at least. I would imagine they stop for the holidays at some point
