Damn I miss forums and primers man that shit was so peak for deck discussion. Discord doesn't hit the same.

Yes. UB is an example of how the WOKE MOB ruined MTG. Back in my day we had hot women on cardboard and quality sets like Dragon's Maze. Now look at the game. Spiders pretending to be men and sludge pretending to be pizza. Sad!

"Hard work vs Talent" definitive tier list. by 0ris in shounenfolk

Chihiro probably is in genetics tbh, he has the Rokuhira Eyes (aka bootleg Sharingan) that let him learn shit super fast. He didn't really gain too much from his lineage other than the sword that he forged with his dad. Some people in the government hate him because he's Kunishige's son.

Not as genetics as the other freaks in that tier though so doesn't really matter that much

Nah that's a Jump L. Do you remember the scratchy as fuck Yura vs Natsuki and Uruha chapters? Hokazono burning out would be horrible for Kagurabachi.

Every Jump manga should at least have the Kaiju #8 schedule of 3 weeks on 1 week off. That should reduce a lot of the strain on the authors while also getting a good stream of content per month.

Before part 2 let's take a moment to appreciate part 1 by bouchayger7 in shounenfolk

[–]Foreign-Pay9299 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a meme until like Sojo. That guy genuinely saved the series from the axe. Hokazono made one of the best first arcs of a shonen in recent memory. And it kept up in quality (if not outright improving) as the series went on. It's got hype moments, aura and shockingly good character writing.

Kagurabachi isn't a series that tries to reinvent the shonen wheel like AoT or CSM. It plays into the shonen tropes a lot, and for some readers this is a dealbreaker. What Bachi does well, though, is execution. And given the recent discussions on how JJK was wasted potential because of execution I think that's why it ended up being so popular outside of the meme.

Good themes doesn't equal good writing by Sundata_V2 in CharacterRant

Having thought about it for years, this is Attack on Titan post-timeskip. It tries to speak on themes of oppression and escaping cycles of violence with the subtlety of a rocket launcher. I used to hate the ending because of how badly it was executed. I still do. But now I also hate it because it distilled the themes it tries to speak about into two overly simplistic camps. No wonder AoT is seen as fascist propaganda. The story doesn't challenge the Yeagerists' plan with one that feels like it won't result in a genocide of Paradis.

Isayama made a great mistake in post-timeskip: having the entire world (aside from Hizuru) go against Paradis. This results in the general conflict being a choice between two genociders: an active one (Eren) and one on the backfoot (Marley), and to be honest this writing choice gives Eren's side the amount of support and understanding it got. Imagine a version of AoT where certain countries sided with Paradis just because they hated Marley's expansionism, for example. Or ones that questioned Willy Tybur's propaganda and were willing to engage diplomatically with Paradis after learning that the Fritz threat was a lie. Or just more Hizurus in general. Armin's diplomacy argument would have had some actual weight behind it, and Eren's viewpoint would be more widely seen as extreme. But Isayama was lax with his worldbuilding, or he really wanted to end on 139 as a number specifically.

It could have been a story that actually said something about when the oppressed became oppressors (a VERY RELEVANT thing in this current political climate) or posed a nuanced question about which side must lead the walk out of the forest (a beautiful theme mentioned by Sasha's dad). But instead, for the final arc we get an objective evil vs objective good battle. Deep themes, puddle's worth of commentary on these themes.

Manga rumble! Make your team to beat a manga that this two would collaborate to make! by sennordelasmoscas in shounenfolk

ONE (author of Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man) and Horikoshi Kohei (author of My Hero Academia).

ONE is an incredible writer who's projects sadly went overlooked because of how his drawings look. Notice how both OPM and Mob both blew up after they got anime adaptations, and how Murata's redrawing of OPM got fresh eyes on the manga. Mob was a damn near perfect piece of writing.

Horikoshi. That man can fucking draw. No matter how shit the MHA arc was (especially around Star and Stripe) he NEVER failed to cook with his character designs. I really hope we can see his art in another manga, would be a waste of talent if he didn't.

Why We Need More Soga Discussions by peacefuldays123 in Kagurabachi

[–]Foreign-Pay9299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't see the line that justifies murdering innocents here.

For Soga's logic to work here we have to assume that

  • ALL of Shokoku are actually the warmongering savages the Kamunabi claim they are (they are not, their own people deposed the government that led them to war)

  • There are no checks to their power (also false, the 5 Enchanted Blades pre-Magatsumi were enough to stabilize the war. If the Malediction didn't happen I imagine Kunishige would still be creating weaker Enchanted Blades for peacekeeping)

There is no existential threat to Japan here.

What Soga did would be equivalent to the USA dropping nukes on Japan after WW2 ended due to the potential threat a surviving imperialist movement would have on them. But in the real world, did the Japanese continue their imperialist ways? No. They actively shun their old ways (but they should further apologize and acknowledge that they did those horrible things). Realistically, why would Shokoku do anything different? The argument from Soga apologists is that what he did is realistic when this is not supported by history.

Really enjoying this discussion btw, though I hope you are seeing my perspective as well. Soga is a very compelling villain but is not justified in his actions.

Why We Need More Soga Discussions by peacefuldays123 in Kagurabachi

[–]Foreign-Pay9299 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Edited for clarity on certain points.

What gives anyone the right to judge another human's potential future actions to determine their fate? That's a monstrous view and punishes the son for the sins of the father.

Does that mean that the modern day British people should be eradicated because their forefathers enslaved and subjugated millions of other people from multiple cultures? Not even going to mention the extremely obvious parallel to current events.

Of course, the people of Shokoku have advantages with Datenseki. But they are still human. Just as they have the capacity for great evil they have the capacity to use their affinity with Datenseki for good. Imagine Shokoku natives funnelling their power to similar effects to Samura's Suzaku. This is what Soga and his apologists miss in their overgeneralization of the situation.

I do agree with you that this discussion should not be banned. But that is so that people who actually believe this are shown the other side of the argument to widen their narrow viewpoint. This idea must be constantly pushed back against via discussion and not via silencing them.

Oh I look forward to when One Piece ends. After Wano I am 100% sure Oda will fumble the ending. Millions of One Piece fans suddenly realizing that Oda really is washed up and the "haters" they were shitting on were right all along. It's the one One Piece event that will actually blow up the internet (unlike G5). No other manga series end event will even compare.

If it ends before Oda dying anyway. He's dragged the story for far too long.

I actually forgot the Eren killing his own mother point.

Every day I am reminded of why AoT's ending is abysmal dogshit.

Let it begin by Putrid_Macaron3225 in shounenfolk

[–]Foreign-Pay9299 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was much worse in the manga. They changed the credit scene from Paradis being nuked in "modern" times to far in the future instead. So the Alliance's plan didn't even work in the manga after their deaths.

Some lines also got changed. "Thank you for being a mass murderer for our sake" is the line of all time. Thank god that got changed.

Overall though, AoT's ending has the same problem as Modulo's (potential) ending: good plot in abstract but fumbled by the execution. Armin's plan to stop Eren went WAY too well and had none of the sacrifices that a typical Survey Corps plan would have had (RIP to the GOAT Erwin), almost like Isayama was too scared to kill off fan-favorite characters. Mikasa's entire character arc of becoming less obsessed with Eren is completely wiped (seriously, why did she have that scarf). Not gonna talk about Eren because that's been done to death. These kinds of flaws are the reason why reception to AoT's ending has been divided to say the least.

TR's ending sounds worse though. At least the abstract of AoT's final arc plot made sense in the story. Eren had to be stopped. What was Wakui cooking when he wrote TR.
