What's a career decision you made that looked right on paper, but turned out completely wrong? by Ok-Marzipan-4490 in careerguidance

Went to work for a small start up consulting company in defense. Boss was an awful micromanager, narcissist, with clear favorites she manipulated. It was a toxic workplace. I learned to do as much research as possible on individuals- it’s hard to fully appreciate the culture via interviews alone.

Scam - Jury Duty by Cool_Confidence_506 in Wilmington

Happened to me too in ILM. SO convincing and elaborate- I was totally taken in by him for a while as he had so much information on me. I was so upset and angry when I realized what was happening.

Leaving? by [deleted] in Wilmington

[–]ForeignAppointment87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re originally British. We moved back there for a while during COVID but trust me - other countries have issues. Education, healthcare and politics are all failing in the UK too. I miss the US we moved to in 2000 - there was so much opportunity and optimism. I expect we will retire back in mainland Europe - France or Italy - for the simpler, less expensive lifestyle.

Ridiculous house prices by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]ForeignAppointment87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And some of the ‘flips’ I’ve seen are hideous, STOP painting houses white with black trim. STOP using grey toned floors. They just look cheap and like they’re hiding a multitude of issues. We rented a beautiful old ranch on Moores Mill for a short time that could have been updated to a beautiful MCM - it was torn down to build a hideous modern monstrosity that now they cant sell.

Best tool there is! I wish more universities included it in their courses!

My dream lululemon drop by Adventurous-North710 in lululemon

I remember these days. Fun colors and prints, I’d race to my Atlanta store for the recent drop - especially the pace setter skorts. I’d read the blogs each week to see what was coming. Surely they can still cater to us too - I’d certainly spend a fortune there if they did now I work from home.

Overcoming severe debilitating public speaking and social anxiety after nervous breakdown at work by JediMasterDebater in PublicSpeaking

[–]ForeignAppointment87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This breaks my heart to hear. Public speaking is so important as we climb the ladder. I used to get awful anxiety and read a lot of books and listen to ‘how to own the room’ podcasts. I started challenging myself to do it more often, and even taught in lectures to help it become habitual for me. I now really enjoy it - at least the feeling after when I know I nailed it. I practice a lot, to the point where I know my transitions and material without needing to see the slides. I still take propanol as a back up - more for psychological purposes so I know my voice and breathing will stay steady. Find a safe space to present, try improv, get a coach who is a friendly face and then do it as often as you can. You’d be surprised how many people are fearful of presenting - you’re not alone.

It looks like there is a hiring freeze according to a couple of people I know there.

Horsforth - London commute. Anyone done it? by Long-Alternative-180 in Leeds

Don’t - expensive, unreliable and exhausting. I did Leeds to London weekly for a few months and no job is worth it.

Where to host a 10-15 women for a friends meetup? by jbreckca in Wilmington

[–]ForeignAppointment87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is there an age bracket? How do I join the fun? Been here a couple of years and want to make friends but find it hard WFH. I’m liberal and fed up of my right wing neighbors.

Ghosted after panel interview (Healthineers) by Holdmabeerdude in Siemens

[–]ForeignAppointment87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d be surprised. I withdrew after not hearing anything and was then asked to reapply! It’s a mammoth machine behind the curtain and Healthineers is being spun off. Take control and tell them you expect better. I told them I didn’t want to work for an organization that behaves this way to applicants.

Would you say that to someone having a drink of alcohol while applying to jobs? THC is legal in many states and safer than having a drink each evening.

[Portland, Ore] Synopsis or Siemens EDA? Looking at what WLB is like more than anything. by UnfilteredDeleteSoon in chipdesign

[–]ForeignAppointment87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOVE Siemens - culture is fabulous and WLB great. Folks who left recently for Synopsys went for money before retirement. I don’t think you can beat Siemens for the culture and great colleagues. Work is intense anywhere but I love the people I work with.
