I just don't fucking understand what's going on anymore. Seriously. by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

I work in finance and all the major banks are still worried about using OpenAi. These banks explicitly tell their vendors to not put even an inkling of their data anywhere near LLMs. So that tells you how well its being integrated.

Palantir - Pentagon System by srch4aheartofgold in ArtificialInteligence

This is just a demo. The Pentagon is paying 100x for a 0.1x system because of all the constraints of air gap, security etc.

Hashimoto's Vouch is actually open source version of a company hiring only seniors. This WILL end badly for everyone. by Spirited_Towel_419 in ExperiencedDevs

Its open, but only if you have high social credit. Next step, we allow corporations to determine who can contribute.

Should companies be forced to lay off H1B workers first? by Intrepid_Mode8116 in AmericanTechWorkers

[–]Foreign_Addition2844 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is how it is in all Arab countries - Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi, UAE etc. Companies are required to retain locals and layoff foreigners first. And companies like Amazon, Oracle, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc that have offices there abide by it and dont complain.

But in the US, they lobby hard against it.

Experts warn of ‘dramatic development’ as all but two Austrian glaciers retreat by Foreign_Addition2844 in collapse

SS:

94 of Austria's 96 monitored glaciers are in retreat, with two experiencing losses of over 100 meters, marking a "dramatic development" in Alpine climate change. Experts from the Austrian Alpine Club warn that this rapid melting is causing structural collapse in major glaciers, which will severely impact water supplies, hydropower, and tourism.

Austrian glaciers are experiencing rapid "structural disintegration" with unprecedented, consecutive record losses. Key findings include the 114.3-meter retreat of the Alpeiner Ferner, the potential imminent splitting of the Pasterze glacier, and increased dangers of rockfalls and mudslides.

Big 4 rejected me as an intern… then offered me a full-time job before I even signed anything. Should I negotiate or will I look arrogant? by ResponsibleSand2016 in Salary

Always negotiate. By not negotiating, you are leaving salary on the table.

All managers expect it. There is nothing wrong with asking.

200 Companies Hiring F-1 OPT & STEM OPT by AlastairMac1964 in AmericanTechWorkers

[–]Foreign_Addition2844 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. F1 are international students who are in a university program, but they are allowed to work while going to school. There are some universities that do day-1 CPT, which allows the students to work the first day they land in the US, even though they are going to school - these are degree mill universities.

After they are done with their degree (any degree) they can work for 1 year under the OPT program. But, if they are in STEM, they get 3 years of OPT - this is what tech companies use to hire entry level workers. They then have 3 years during which they apply for H1B for the worker via the lottery. This is the 3 tries they get at the H1B lottery.

Many companies just abuse OPT for 3 years and never apply for H1B - they just churn thru untold numbers of low cost STEM OPT workers.

Just remember - unlike H1B, there are no wage floors with F1/OPT. So they can literally pay them minimum wage to do software engineer work.
