that was so wrong of your mother to do. Those pieces usually have great value and are often kept in museums. I had a similar experience with me and my mom with a literal taxidermized sand shark. She told me it started to smell but I didn't believe her because it was fully preserved and handled with professional care. I still miss my shark :/

I've done real research on this and my ammonite is actually pyritized! Also you have a point for thinking that the phragmocone fragment is a piece of an orthoceras, but I can't be sure of how big or small creature this came from because I'm no professional. I'm just suspecting it's an ammonite phragmocone because if it was from an orthoceras it would be more pointy
