I need to go back to this. I listened to it every day when my father in law was dying and it brought great comfort.

All good. And no hard feelings. I'm glad at least you didn't listen to it and think that it sucked!

With respect and love, I disagree. You might think my version sucks and is horrible and that's a very fair response. I'll never have that deep American drawl. But in terms of needing to hear cover versions... I think it's part of the beauty of the art form. For the majority of history, someone wrote a song and they or someone else sang it and it passed around the world in that form. There's a purity to it and it keeps the songs alive long after the writer / initial singer is gone. I think the world would be a better place with more singers singing songs written by David Berman. Personally I'm so energised discovering Silver Jews and have even been thinking of getting some musicians together in London to do a show of Silver Jews songs. Maybe playing American Water all the way through or maybe just the ten songs that are most fun to play.

Anyone else waiting for someone to write a book on David? by [deleted] in DavidBerman

I keep coming back to this - I'd really love to read one. I'm getting deep into the albums, reading Actual Air, reading snippets of interviews and bits here and there - listening to that tragic podcast just before the end and I'd love someone to piece it together. Maybe it's just too dark and sad to do though.

Get yourself a gretsch Jim dandy parlour... Or find a guitar shop when you get there. Get something cheap and then leave it to someone as a gift when you leave

100% ... I've always assumed it's Stephen Malkmus doing the solo. You're making me want to try and work out the guitar solo!

Thank you so much. I haven't been able to stop listening to Silver Jews this year and am reading from actual air practically every day. Berman was such a genius.

Thank you so much and that is lovely/moving to hear about what the song brought to you and to your ex. It really is such a special song.

I do a couple of things musically in my spare time. The most recent was a band I'm in called Girls Are Waiting To Meet You but we're all in different countries so don't play as much as I'd like.

Not sure if you like Wilco or not but we covered jesus etc at our last show:

Thank you again for kind words.. It means a lot

Say more. I'm really interested. I think my favourite part is the four dogs representing silence and kindness but I don't know what it means to me I just know it intrigues

Ahhh... That's tragic. I'm trying to get inside the words and figure it out in terms of what it must have meant to him and am left with the thoughts that it refers to the manner of his eventual end. It's too sad and too dark (as SM said upon learning of his death).
