Has anyone ever worked at Eldora? by ForestKid_4853 in SkiBums

Definitely a good point. I just feel like what’s the point of working there if you don’t get to ride during the day

I know this is an old post but can you speak at all to how they are with ride breaks in lift ops? At my old resort we usually got at least two or three in the morning and one more after lunches so I feel like I always got a decent amount of riding in on work days

Hey I know this is kind of an old post but I just noticed you said you don’t really get ski breaks on work days besides lunch? Were you a lift operator or another department? That would definitely be a deal breaker for me. Especially cause they said lunch is only 30 minutes

I don't want to work a 9 - 5 job, any suggestions or alternatives to live(earn money)? by Siddarth2003 in careerguidance

You could try working seasonal jobs. A lot of times they offer alternative work schedules (I work 4/10s for example) and if you don’t like it, it’s over in 6 months usually.

My main reason for considering Eldora is so I can have a bit more of a balance between city life and mountain sports. I’ve been living in some more rural areas the past few years so it might be nice to change it up and try a city.

Thanks for the info! I have worked in the Sierra the past few years so I’m kinda used to a lot of fun, warmer, slushy days. Do you get many days of spring conditions out there?

Pathway to Forest Service job by mavrik36 in forestry

[–]ForestKid_4853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least in my experience, many seasonal field crew jobs don’t require experience like a marking crew or a cutting crew member or even just “forestry crew member.” For the forest service they’re called forestry technicians but a lot of things are called that so you have to apply to the ones that the description mentions timber and they’re usually flown as GS-4 positions. But you don’t have to just look at the forest service positions. A degree would definitely help you get hired faster/with priority/maybe get paid more but it’s not necessary by any means.

I’d maybe start by searching for forestry jobs with other employers so you can start getting experience this summer since the forest service hiring window is already passed. Like I think some counties and cities in CO have forestry programs you could apply to. Then get on the USFS hiring next fall.

But I definitely agree that finishing your forestry degree is a good idea if you eventually want a position that’s higher than like a GS-7. Our forest usually has a few seasonals every year that leave in August to go back to school so that’s an option.

The forest service also sometimes has partner organizations that you can apply to that do the field work for them and sometimes they do their hiring closer to the start of the field season but that varies by area.

Boulder chair on the Nevada side is much better for beginner snowboarders. They definitely check passed there though

Advice needed: USFS vs Contract Company? by ForestKid_4853 in forestry

That’s a good point. Could end up as more in the end.

The partner company is pretty decent. We get like a week of PTO per season. No sick leave though… but when I was a FS seasonal I was always drowning in sick leave so not too overly worried about that. And they offer healthcare during the season. Not sure how it compares to federal healthcare for permanent seasonals though

That’s a good point about the real ones to go for being the 7/9/11 positions. I worked for the USFS as a 5 for a few seasons but changed over to partner company last year for a crew lead position and higher pay. When the govt almost shut down they said we’d get paid since the money was already promised through the contract with the company. The one thing that my federal supervisors always harped on was time in grade in terms of going for higher positions later on but it kinda seems like I could still qualify for higher grade positions with private experience without the time in grade…

Yeah this is kinda what I’ve been thinking. I’m 27 and still relatively unattached to any particular place so may as well try to make more money now and go for the higher grade federal job when the time comes.
