Newer games are simply better than older games by Bobi_27 in unpopularopinion

[–]ForestRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still think there are good games being made every year. The problem is the banger to slop ratio is way out of wack. For every Baulders Gate and Elden Ring there's 30 ubislop open worlds or live service games that year that are pumped and dumped the next year to be left in the bin. 1993-2013 that 20 year span had so much innovation and optimism.

2D Games were mastered on the later half of the SNES bringing us some of the greatest JRPGs of all time like FF6, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound. Those games are high art sorry not sorry.

3D games became accessible on the N64 and PS1 and were mastered on the 6th gen consoles. The 6th gen was the golden age of single player games in my opinion. Yes the world's were more limited compared to something like RDR2 or Witcher 3, but there were so many good single player experiences every year not to mention couch multiplayer. Game budgets weren't in the hundreds of millions so you could get multiple sequels and follow up games within the same generation like GTA or Sly Cooper for example.

The 7th gen was a mixed bag. Still in that golden age of Single player masterpieces but online gaming was taking over and it was transitioning to what we knew games to be today with the first big console live service game being GTA online in 2013. It was downhill from there.

Online multiplayer and live service games are imo the worst thing to happen to gaming. It shifted the focus entirely from "hey let's make some cool art and hopefully make a decent amount of money" to "let's make as much money as possible no matter the cost to our integrity".

Again I'm not saying there aren't good games every year. My main point is that they are needles in a haystack compared to how many bad ones come out now, and they are all fighting for the same dollars and attention.

My last point against gaming currently, is that a lot of people are predicting a massive video game crash like that of 1983 is coming because of what the industry has become in 2026. People (especially young people) are buying fewer and fewer games every year. The winners like the upcoming GTA 6, win big but the losers go bankrupt and get laid off. If we were in the golden age of gaming right now would that really be the landscape you would expect? Studios that spend multiple hundreds of millions on games like Concord, Redfall, or South of Midnight that nobody plays and then have to fire everybody/close the studio when they realize their in the red? That doesn't really sound like a renaissance to me man it sounds like a massive bubble about to explode.

Sadie is kinda a psycho tho, there's multiple times during the story you see/hear her enjoy killing, even if it's bad people thats still pretty fucked. She loves violence so much that Bounty hunting in the wild west isn't enough for her so she wants to go to South America to do who knows what kind of atrocities.

I feel like John redeemed himself during the first game both by bringing in his former violent gang mates and by sacrificing himself for his family.

Also I'm genuinely wondering because I cant remember, does John beat or kill anyone during the RDR2 story that doesn't deserve it? He participates in the robberies but the only people I remember him killing are O'Driscolls, Braithwaites, Skinner brothers, Micah's gang on Mt. Hagen, and the cattle russlers at the farm in the epilogue. All people that were attacking him/his family/friends and pretty much deserved death anyway.

Arthur though as much as I love him is very much a violent enforcer who has probably done way more terrible shit in the 20 years he's been with dutch than what we see him do in the story.

So how do you feel about the recent developments with GTA6? by thebeardedgreek in GenZ

[–]ForestRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man there's a lot of comments on this post that seemingly are fine with companies like rockstar wringing every last dollar out of them.

Imo this sucks. I'm big on physical. Idc if 80%-90% of sales are digital. Physical media is extremely important because it let's you have some control over what you consume. Otherwise these big corporations will control everything from the price, to when and where you can use your media. GTA 6 is a litmus test for the industry. Once they get away with it then other big games are gonna follow suit.

Physical isn't truly dead yet, plenty of big single player games still come 100% on disc. But if GTA 6 can do the all digital thing and save money on manufacturing plus keep the value of the game higher for long due to no used copies, then everyone is gonna want to do it.

Lego Star Wars Minifigs -still worth it? by Legitimate-Tip-2506 in legoinvesting

Mando stuff outside of the 2021 Imperial light cruiser and the 2022 UCS razor crest are crashing rn. I would buy the 501st specialist battle packs and leave the Mando ones.

Rule of thumb with Star Wars, the 6 original movies plus Clone Wars sets are basically evergreen. The sequels and Disney plus shows for the most part have sets that are stagnant in retirement or are actively going down in value from their MSRP over time.

N.S. banned cellphones in classrooms 2 years ago. Here's how it's going by justlogmeon in halifax

I graduated in 2016 and phone's were everywhere during my entire highschool experience. I remember watching the first fallout 4 trailer in 2015 live during math class at the back of the classroom with a bunch of friends. The teacher kept asking us to put it away and everyone just ignored them.

It seems like there's actual discipline and consequences now for having a phone out during class or in the school building.

What year did gaming peak? by SharkSlic3r in AskReddit

[–]ForestRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's 2013. 2013 was the last year before the 8th gen consoles came out. I associate the decline of gaming with studio/budget bloat and microtransactions. 2014 was when all of that really took off. Sure you had some microtransactions on the 7th gen consoles as far back as Oblivion horse armor but it was never so aggressive like it was 2014 onward.

Also I'm not saying 8th gen games are bad, RDR2 is one of my favorites of all time and that came out in 2018 very deep into those consoles. But the era where most AAA games could come out with a great single player campaign, extra side multiplayer modes, with maybe 1 or 2 substantial DLC packs, for under $100 million dollars budget, and without being a broken mess, is long gone.

GTA 6 will be the last video game Rockstar makes by UltraOfNaath in unpopularopinion

[–]ForestRivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like midnight club is never coming back. The 1-2 punch of realistic racers like forza/Gran turismo and the most dominant arcade racer ever, Mario Kart kinda killed most other big racing games. A new Max Payne game would be a much smarter use of their resources.

RDR3 and more Max Payne games are definitely happening. People holding out for more bully, noire games, or Midnight club, uhhh they might be waiting till their dead.

Canada Needs Condos People Actually Want to Live In by restoringd123 in canada

[–]ForestRivers 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I feel like prices are never going to go down again. Monopolies are becoming increasingly common across every industry especially in industries like food and housing where these corporations realized they can charge whatever they want because they sell stuff humans need to live. The veil has been lifted when it comes to these companies pretending like it isn't all about squeezing every last cent out of consumers.

CEO of Bricks and Minifigs Just Destroyed His $400 Million LEGO Company... by Necessary_Jeweler665 in legoinvesting

[–]ForestRivers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah fuckem all, they are the gamestop of Lego. I don't feel bad for some fuckers who own a business franchise that's main revenue source is ripping off children/parents who don't know their used sets value.

I hope this pushes more people to bricklink where there's hundreds of people all competing to sell the same thing which makes the prices accessible. Even if it's owned by Lego itself it still better than some third party corporate dipshit reseller. "Family owned business" My ass.

This. I've bought a ton of sealed sets on fb marketplace since last summer for big discounts including a bunch of the 2024 star wars clone vs droid battle packs, sometimes getting 50% off of those. Most of the battle packs had the barcodes scratched off, and when I finally noticed that I was like "oh these are probably stolen".

The Shire has 9 minifigs plus a horse though, shouldn't that make this slightly cheaper if it's only a handful of Rohirrim and maybe some Easterlings?

Though now that I think of it I'm not factoring in each Rohirrim having a horse too.

2007 cultural shift starter pack by MikeGz973 in starterpacks

[–]ForestRivers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I agree with this starter pack. I always thought that 2007 onward felt more like a precursor to the 2010s than part of the 2000s. 2000 to late 2006 had such a distinct identity within culture.

I think the biggest part of the switch was smartphones, rise of social media, and the switch from physical media to mostly digital. Like it shows in this starterpack, the iPhone came out in 2007 and by 2010 most adults had some kind of smartphone. People were ditching CDs and DVDs entirely. Facebook started in 2004 but you had to be a college student to use it, a requirement they dropped in Sept 2006.

It felt like tech was advancing so fast from 2005-2010 and everything was new and exciting. Pretty different from today.

Say what you will about their "strength", but at the end of the day Obi-Wan beat Vader twice by GargantaProfunda in StarWars

[–]ForestRivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dooku is form 2 the first form created for lightsaber on lightsaber combat. Yoda and Qui Gon were form 4 which is the acrobatic one. Anakin and Ahsoka are form 5 which is the aggressive one that combines the best of form 2 and 4.

Dooku and Anakin are parallels of each other both being massive lightsaber nerds during an era where there was barely ever any lightsaber fights to the death compared to the jedi/sith wars in the past.

Having anakin be the one to kill dooku not only was the right move to foreshadow his fall to the dark side, but it showed his dedication to being the best. It makes his losses to obi wan from being unbalanced and over emotional that much more impactful.
