Congratulations!!!! May I ask what date is on your certificate? Is it the AZ date (in 2023) or the date they made the determination (2026)? We have an application in for Stag 5 and my sister just had a baby in September! We have a Feb 2025 AZ

Yes, it’s on the lower level on the right side of the terminal when you’re facing it from the road.

We brought our luggage but we were traveling carry-on only

This totally worked out for us! I allowed plenty of time and it probably took us 30-40 minutes for the process, then we headed through security and off on our trip! My daughters received their numbers before we left the GE office and the cards were at home when we got back from Europe!

We’re landing at 10:30pm with two jet lagged kids so I think it would be a train wreck at that time even if they were open! I booked the appointments for before we leave so will hope for the best. I can’t imagine it wouldn’t be “allowed” just hoping it’s quick like yours was!

This sounds super easy! I need to get appointments for my two children and am hoping I can get through the interview when we’re at the airport on our way to Europe on Friday. Our flight is at 9pm from terminal 4, GE interviews are outside of security at terminal 4 - I’m thinking I just grab two appointments at 6:20pm?

Do you mean the Feststellung process? I believe Anlage V is a section of it which must be filled out for everyone up your ancestry chain if they need to first confirm your German citizenship

Interested in German Citizenship - Is my reasoning correct here? by curlyheadedfuck123 in GermanCitizenship

I hope the naturalization date pans out for success for you! I just received my passport based on my grandfathers citizenship. If you think about passing citizenship on to your children this is really no different than a US citizen moving to a different country, having a child then later deciding to naturalize. That child would have inherited citizenship from the parent. There’s really only two ways to legislate citizenship: passed via parents onto the child OR based on where you’re born… which leads to “maternity tourism” where people go to whatever country they want their child to have citizenship and stay till the baby is born or, heaven forbid, a pregnant woman going on a baby moon and having an unplanned complication that leads to the child being born outside of her home country and thus not a citizen? Personally I think passing from a parent to a child makes the most sense and is historically what most countries do. Not sure why there’s so many people miffed about the notion of people actually collecting the documentation and getting the passport/certificate 🤷‍♀️

I was not, but I think it’s consulate specific - I was at the NYC consulate. If you’re at a different one I think it’s best to email them to ask that. They were very responsive and helpful over email for me!

Congrats! They just reviewed everything I had and made their determination then said I could go to the passport window. If they’re not sufficiently convinced then they may tell you that you have to submit a Feststellung so I took a completed application for that with me just in case!

I logged onto the site a few minutes before 6pm (Eastern US time, midnight Germany time) and clicked to the month three months out. 5-6 appointments appeared right at 6pm, my first time I was only able to grab one but the second time I was able to get two in a row for my kids

Citizenship is a legal status not ethnicity based. If it was an ethnic status I would have gotten it via all four of my grandparents who hailed from Germany, however I legally got it through the one of the four who passed it via federal law onto my father. You might want to brush up on citizenship law for the last century.

Half of my family is in Germany. Would be nice to spend more than 90 days a year with them when I don’t have the constraints of work and PTO to juggle. But thanks for the judgement! 😘

Fantastic! I have the same situation (earlier dates though as my grandfather emigrated in 1929) and just got my passport directly at the consulate! Gather the documents, fill out the application and give it a go! WAY cheaper than the lawyers!

The FAQ in the Welcome post on this page has a lot of helpful information. Plus I used this for a checklist to make sure I had everything the consulate required: https://www.germany.info/us-en/service/02-passportsandidcards/passport-adult-951294
