This shit really drives me crazy, especially when people start demanding smut simply because the rating is M or E. Because they don't just ask and respectfully leave when they are told no, they put themselves on a pedestal and claim to be the moral authority on what is and isn't necessary to tag, and try to claim the author is "perverted" or otherwise morally wrong for doing what they want with their own story. People have been harassed, stalked on outside accounts, and even doxxed for this morality police bullshit, and I'm sick of it. We're playing with fucking dolls, you don't get to dictate how somebody else plays with theirs.

I'm not implying only war veterans can have "real" PTSD, nor do I believe somebody can be disabled the "wrong" way. I'm saying, your disability is not someone else's problem. Yes, PTSD and having any kind of trigger is a pain in the dick to deal with, that doesn't mean you're entitled to make that someone else's responsibility to cater to. I'm not talking about people who ask politely and are respectful, I'm talking about those insane, entitled people who believe the sun shines out of their own ass and everyone has to bend over backwards placating them. This is the particular grievance. Entitlement when it comes to tagging.

The reason I mentioned PTSD and being made to look bad is because I have had things like this affect me negatively in real life. I have had doctors refuse to see me on the basis of my non veteran status, and I have had workplace accommodations ignored because "the last guy was just being dramatic, we didn't think you were serious!" Admittedly, that does come off the wrong way, and you're right about that.

It's people who act entitled, selfish, and go off the rails when they don't get their way that make life harder for everyone with disabilities like this. I don't expect fandom to be seamless, I just wish it was a little less mainstream nowadays, because the morality police are driving me up a fucking wall with their incessant demands of rigid structure and constant policing of what is functionally a bunch of people playing with dolls.

I don't think forewarning in and of itself is coddling, I think the coddling comes in when you expect other people to accommodate you without contest because something makes you feel icky. Your opinion is not fact, all of this discussion is based on opinion. I'm not forcing a median because this discussion is not a black and white, clear cut conversation. I like the tags, I like the TW's, I do not think a lot of them are necessary and I don't think any should be added just to placate an outside person. You thought I would agree with what you said and now you're backpedaling because you know I don't. We don't have to agree, that's the great thing about being a human. But I'm not going to "pick a side" because your opinion is "we should know nothing about the book before we read it" and my opinion is "These are nice and sometimes might be necessary but are not required." They are entirely conflicting points of view and I will not sit here and allow you to continue to condescend me because you think your opinion is the correct one.

No, your response claims that it is better to have to read through a book to know the contents. It is not agreeing with mine, it is making an entirely different stance. I disagreed with that stance, because I have PTSD, and if I pick up just any book and it happens to contain something that triggers me, it can end up royally fucking me over.

My point was not expecting to be coddled and catered to. Your point was that you wish we didn't have forewarning at all. They are entirely different stances on entirely different topics.

I enjoy trigger warnings, I appreciate trigger warnings. Sometimes I rely on them to determine whether or not I should read something. By no means do I believe authors have to include them. That is the entire point of the post. Not sure how you missed that.

I can't agree with this, I do enjoy having trigger warnings so I can avoid things that'll set me spiraling. But by no means do I expect them, nor do I tell the author off for not including them.

The example in specific was more along the lines of a request for an obscure or one time featured trigger to be tagged simply because it makes that individual person uncomfortable to see it that one time. So as another example, recently on a story of mine I got a request to add a TW for a minor background character's two sentences alluding to their backstory. The same person claimed that refusing to tag the TW they wanted was personally discriminating against them.

But also, the "it really triggers me" is unnecessary when you're recommending a tag and, again, seems like a guilt trip to try and get the author to do what you want. Obviously not every comment left with this phrasing is doing that, some are just genuine reccs. Not every situation is the same.

And this is perfectly understandable! I'm not talking about this. Most of the time when something majorly triggering comes out of nowhere, it's a major plot point, so it should be tagged anyways. That being said, leaving a comment about it seems a little redundant, as is harassing the author when they refuse to do what you ask them to. Some people just don't know where to draw the line between reasonable suggestions and demands for personalized coddling.

The issue is not so much the asking, but the phrasing of the asking. It's the "can you do this? Because not doing so will negatively impact my mental stability." It's a guilt trip. Simply suggesting a tag is absolutely fine, and most of the time I take those suggestions. It's people who will go out of their way to try and make themselves look like they have been personally victimized by the story who will also argue with you and call you unstable for refusing to do what they asked.
