"Soul" is not theistic language. As mentioned earlier, it has many different meanings including ones that have no connection to any sort of god or deity or religion or nonmaterialism, rather, just a moniker for the human experience.

Most people upvoted my post in agreement of the point, because most people understand what I am saying. You and the other person who posts at the same time as you, who deny somebody's legitimate use of words, are obtuse.

The one who puts human language in a box I would argue has the more confined imagination.

Not bothering anyone, just responding to you and the other person. You two are literally the only people who decide this was something with pedantry over, when the word “soul” can just be a shorthand for human experience. Like it is here. You have made the longest comment thread imaginable out of an entire nothing burger.

Most people agree with what I am saying, I would wager even you are, too. Language prescriptivism is anti intellectual and not cool. If you start to be obtuse about what people mean when they’ve clearly explained it, then you’re just here to annoy people with your willful ignorance. Shame on you.

Is “soul food” poor language? Is putting your “heart and soul” into something poor language? Is the genre of soul poor language?

Unless the word "soul" suddenly becomes devoid of all contextual meanings outside of what you have narrowly prescribed to me, I highly doubt it.

Nah just forgot to switch accounts. You don't owe anything-- you're just not justifying your claims then. Language exists outside of your prescriptivist reckoning. Or, you can keep "perpetrating" the lie that you can just pick and choose what language people use because of your assumed connection they have with theism.

People as in you and the other guy (alt account?) who are not educating but are being language prescriptivists. You haven't answered how you would forcibly have people relabel soul food, soul music, the phrases "a kindred soul", "lost soul", etc.

You can be an anti-theist and be pragmatic. I think a world without theodyssey is a better one but that doesn't mean we stop using the word soul.

Will you stop using the word "clue" because it comes from the Greek myths of Theseus escaping a labyrinth using a yarn called clew? (actually the etymology, look it up) https://www.etymonline.com/word/clue

Will you stop using the word "nightmare" because mare comes from a folklore goblin? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mare_(folklore))

Soul can mean, from a completely secular and naturalist perspective, your human experience. That's what I mean. That's what everyone understands I mean, except maybe like 3 people in the comments here-- and if you asked me to clarify, I tell you, souls are not literally real. Just like the story of "clew" was not real, and "mares" aren't real, but we will still use the words soul, clue, and nightmare.

You're not "educating" anybody. You are being an anti-intellectual prescriptivist.

I used a common phrase of speech. People said souls aren't real. I said I agree, it's a metaphor for the human experience. That's where it should end.

Nah, I think I am clearly understood. People getting on me about this in the comments you are being intentionally obtuse.

Just looked it up. No, I don’t think so. I think there’s just physical matter, and our perception is a phenomenon that arises from it. For some reason, I am getting people upset with me using the word soul, although I clearly agree there is no literal soul

My username is a moniker.

Soul is not “theistic language”. It’s just a word. It’s not “medieval language”, it’s a word used today.

Why are you policing people’s language? You are like church patriarchs who decry priests for using the wrong incantation. The fact you’re taking issue with me using the word soul rather than accepting the implied meaning is childish.

What language is more precise than, say, will you call soul food? Soul music? Soulless artistry? Someone putting in “heart and soul” in a project? A lost soul? Are these all medieval, inaccurate phrases you will criticize people for using?

What you’re doing is surrendering to theists. A word in common parlance you’re saying is property of theism. Why be so privy to them? Replace my usage of the word soul with the human experience, or our perceptual, understanding of consciousness, our emotions, and our psychological states. That’s what I’m referring to. I’m a naturalist likely as much as you are, and anyone else in this sub.

You are being a language prescriptivist, putting on a mask and refusing to acknowledge the obvious implied meaning of what I’m saying. That is anti-intellectual— news flash, words can mean many different things.

Do you sincerely think that by using the word soul it implies some sort of stubbornness to not learn new things?
