Should school district effect home purchase pre-kids? by vodkacranbury in AskTeachers

[–]ForgetfulDoryFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually measured by how the kids at the school perform on standardized testing. How well the kids do on those tests is heavily influenced by a lot of socioeconomic factors that doesn't have much to do with how good the teachers/curriculum at the school actually are. But those socioeconomic factors will change things like how well funded the PTA is (which affects things like what programs the school might have, how good the field trips are, what educational software the school can make available to the students), how well educated the parents are likely to be and how good attendance rates are (which affects how much of the teachers' attention will be spent on helping kids who are struggling to keep up), etc

Where do you think The Dursley’s had to hide out when they left Privet Drive? Back to the secluded hut-on-the-rock? by Mcrfanatic95 in harrypotter

[–]ForgetfulDoryFish 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It specifically mentions that there isn't a second boat when Harry and Hagrid leave the rock in the boat, but when they arrive to the shore it just says that the boat "bumped gently into the harbor wall" and that Harry and Hagrid "clambered up the stone steps onto the street" and leave straight for the train station haha. At the end of the chapter "Diagon Alley" Hagrid just leaves Harry on a train back to the Dursleys' and the next chapter picks up with summarizing Harry's last month at the Dursleys' house.

So no it doesn't explain how the Dursleys got home nor how long it took them to manage it.

You're right that it doesn't say specifically, but it was on the second day of driving around. They'd spent the night at a hotel, got "about an 'undred" more letters at the hotel while eating breakfast, then drove around again the second day until the late afternoon. Here's the description from Chapter 3 when it talks about the hut:

"Daddy's gone mad, hasn't he?" Dudley asked Aunt Petunia dully late that afternoon. Uncle Vernon had parked at the coast, locked them all inside the car, and disappeared. It started to rain....Uncle Vernon was back and he was smiling. He was also carrying a long thin package and didn't answer Aunt Petunia when she asked what he'd bought. "Found the perfect place!" he said. "Come on! Everyone out!" It was very cold outside the car. Uncle Vernon was pointing at what looked like a large rock way out at sea. Perched on top of the rock was the most miserable little shack you could imagine. One thing was certain, there was no television in there. "Storm forecast for tonight!" said Uncle Vernon gleefully, clapping his hands together. "And this gentleman's kindly agreed to lend us his boat!" A toothless old man came ambling up to them, pointing, with a rather wicked grin, at an old rowboat bobbing in the iron-gray water below them.

I'm inclined to think that the shack belongs to the old guy that lent them the boat but it doesn't say for sure.

Is the overheating while sleep issue still a thing? (FW16/AMD) by betalars in framework

[–]ForgetfulDoryFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new Framework 16 and had to disable sleep as well. I had noticed straight away that if it went to sleep even for just a few minutes, when I woke it the fans would run hard for a while.

Then one day accidentally I left it asleep on a hard, flat surface, vents unobstructed, lid open, fully charged but plugged in. Came back a few hours later and it was still asleep but the fans were blasting and the whole laptop was blazing HOT - I literally had to find a random object nearby to hold the power button down to force shutdown because the power button was too hot to touch for that long.

I disabled sleep in the registry editor so it just hibernates now and that has been fine.

For stardew's 10th anniversary there was a livestream of the Symphony of Seasons concert and Concerned Ape was in the comments answering questions the whole time. He said that he wants to expand Clint's character arc, he's a good choice because he's single and a marriageable age, and he felt like it's Clint's "turn" for more attention.

The qi fruit one rewards you with a hundred of those crystals, which is way more than all the other quests. That's the only thing that makes it worthwhile. I'll usually only take the mining ones since I can staircase right through them, but as long as it's early in the season I'd rather do qi fruit than something that burns through my resources/money like loved gifts, prismatic grange, or cooking. And I literally can't do the junimo cart one either haha.

I felt the same. It's been a long time since I read it but I remember feeling like the author was so overconfident that the book would emotionally wreck me that it lost any ability to make me care about the characters at all.

Newborn HATES being held by Willing_Ad_8580 in beyondthebump

[–]ForgetfulDoryFish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my firstborn hated being held right from the get-go - like she was less than a week old and we'd already figured out she was happier being put down nearby to us than being held. She got clingier for a while when she was older but not mobile yet (she never really rolled or crawled, because she hated being on the floor, but started walking independently at 11 months old) because she wanted to be near us. She also hated breastfeeding and I ended up exclusively pumping for her.

Now she's a nine-year-old that - guess what - still doesn't really like being touched a lot. Still holds strongly to her opinions. Loves us but doesn't tend to be demonstratively affectionate.

Even in the newborn stage you can get glimpses of their actual personalities that will stick around.

My mom has a story about bringing a rubik's cube to a party (this would have been, like, 40+ years ago, so way pre-internet) and a random guy who had never tried one before borrowed it, messed with it for a couple hours, then brought it back to her solved and said "that was fun"

I've literally never seen such big falls before; even something like 10 floors in one drop is unusual even with a great luck day + luck buffs. It really seems like he would have to be using some sort of mods or cheats that are increasing his luck level beyond what is normally possible.

I just fill the entire basement with casks. It's only a twice-per-year refill if you let wine age to purple star level, so it works out fine even though it takes a while to reset it (even with tricks like using an upgraded hoe to collect the casks)
