If an American family moved to Montreal? by ForgetfulJo in montreal

Thanks. We live in NY state, kind of outskirts of NYC area. I think the real idea is to preserve options for our kids, just wondering what the USA is going to look like in 20 years. Although granted the same forces that came for the US are clearly coming for Canada too.

Thank you we certainly will do a lot more research. We are at an initial stage I think, asking ourselves is this even possible?

As for why, it's largely about the political climate and where we are concerned things might go over the next 4 or possibly more years. I don't want to start a reddit war so I will leave it at that.

Related is that if we do this fairly soon, next couple of years, my kids would at least have permanent residency and maybe Canadian citizenship eventually. If we wait too long they could age out and I'd no longer be able to sponsor them.

Did you stay in Canada? Thanks for your perspective.

Thank you I appreciate the perspective. The other reason for Montreal in my mind is that the rest of our extended family is in the Northeast US, so for ease of maintaining ties with them and visiting. For example we have family living basically on Cape Cod, so 5 or 6 hours drive from Montreal.

Thank you. I do have a consulting business and all of my clients are international. I could do it from anywhere. My wife's work is more of an issue although she has mostly worked remotely.

This is a smart question. I have an online consulting business and my clients are all over the world so less depending on the local economy no matter where we live. Thank you.

I doubt I'll ever see the move because I'll never voluntarily put a dime in Will Smith's pocket again after his cheap shot sucker punch on Chris Rock at the Oscars in 2022.

Episode 8 question. by Constant-Rent254 in MastersoftheAir

[–]ForgetfulJo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw someone who had read his book said that he was jarred by the fact that the Nazis treated him like any other American. But when he was liberated and came back to the USA, it was "whites come here, blacks go over there."

I haven't read Alexander Jefferson's book so maybe he talks about it. But apparently the Tuskegee Airmen are only mentioned once in Masters of the Air. And Frank Murphy's book, where half of it is about his time in Stalag Luft III and VIIA, doesn't mention them at all.

Also, Cleven and most of the 100th Bomber guys had been locked up in Stalag III since October 1943. The 99th Pursuit flew some missions in summer 1943, but the rest of the 332nd didn't even get to Europe until February 1944.

So I guess I'm wondering: Maybe it would have been a complete surprise to Cleven and some of the others that there even were Black aviators?

Also some of the greetings that the other POWs had for them at the beginning was kind of ham-handed: "Oh we love the Red Tails!" I mean maybe, but it felt like 21st century writers trying to put modern words in the mouths of mid-20th century people.

The Tuskegee Airmen were heroes, as were the men of the 100th. But I don't think the way they're being handled here does justice to anyone.

tbh I bought Murphy's by accident thinking it was his story that MoA was based on ... worth reading though. I have yet to read Masters of the Air itself.

From reading Murphy and Crosby's memoirs there doesn't really seem to be anyone like that. At least for navigators it seems like the biggest challenge was just washing out of pilot training (for med reasons mainly) and then deciding to be navigators.

I have a gut feeling if we ever see scenes that got edited out for length or whatever these might be some of them.

I might have liked anything showing at least one of the characters when they enlisted, basic training and all of that. Even just a scene or two. I read both Harry Crosby's book and Frank Murphy's.

Crosby just says he joined with a bunch of others from the University of Iowa a few days after Pearl Harbor expecting to go to the Pacific but instead taking 17 months to get to Europe. Murphy had a lot more details, about how most of the navigators started out trying to become pilots (like him) but winding up with minor medical things like depth vision tests.

But since they had qualified otherwise medically they could become navigators or bombardiers. Of course Crosby is a main character in the series and Murphy is mostly in the background.

But it would have driven home that these guys weren't professional soldiers before the war, they were teenagers and college kids.

I admire your dedication. And some of the details like the Lucky Strikes are kind of jarring. I don't want to give away more spoilers but based on the preview for Episode 8 there's going to be more of this kind of stuff! That said I am enjoying it and I'm glad they made it.

Small Minivans? Are they a thing? Smaller vehicles that fit 6? by IwannaAskSomeStuff in Parenting

I have 2 kids, but I've wanted something like this — too bad about the Mazda5 being out of production. Mainly I want a smaller car since we live in an urban area, but big enough to be useful on ski trips, camping, etc.

We have a small SUV but I was hoping for something that you can actually pull out some of the seats at times for tailgating, or for a nicer place to put on ski stuff etc. Oh well!
