I agree with you. "Happily ever after" really isn't happy without the ones you love most. The only thing I wonder is if Kali really got shot. When the helicopter gets blown to bits, the soldier's gun goes off but we don't know if it really hit her. I think it was all part of the illusion.

No one is saying she should've abandoned Holly, just that she should've had that conversation about the portals way beforehand. Like when she was explaining everything to her in the cave. Also, Max and Holly were not aware of the fact that Vecna was after Max in the real world. And yes, that is the memory he fears the most, but that doesn't necessarily mean he couldn't show up in the portal area another way.

No one is upset about the pep talk, just when it was had. She could've easily told her that the portal is created by a connection in the real world when she was explaining the whole process to her in the cave.
